Library Resource Officer, Armed

Security Officers work with the public and staff to explain and, when needed, enforce Library Rules of Conduct, policies and procedures.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities: will be outlined in assigned post orders. Duties may include the following; other duties may be assigned by the Operations Manager or Regional Vice President:

  • Follows all assigned post orders, both general and specific;
  • Work with Library staff to identify and resolve security problems and to keep the Library Account Manager informed of activities and/or problems.
  • Notifies staff of presence of persons with questionable reputations;
  • Patrols lobbies, corridors, and public rooms, confers with management, interviews guests and employees, and questions persons to detect infringements and investigate disturbances, complaints, thefts, vandalisms, and accidents;
  • Patrols library facilities in order to identify, prevent, and respond to violations of the Library's Rules of Conduct, policies and procedures.
  • Apply the use of force rules based on the situation. Employs graduated use of force to ensure that only that force which is necessary to subdue or detain is used.
  • Patrols public areas to detect fires, unsafe conditions, and missing or inoperative safety equipment;
  • Examines doors, windows, and gates to determine that they are secure;
  • Performs and sets thermostatic controls to maintain specified temperature in buildings or cold storage rooms;
  • Inspects equipment and machinery to ascertain if tampering has occurred;
  • Registers at watch stations to record time of inspection trips;
  • Inspects assigned areas and records data such as property damage, unusual occurrences, and malfunctioning of machinery or equipment, for use of supervisory staff;
  • Watches for and reports irregularities such as fire hazards, leaking water pipes, and security doors left unlocked;
  • Warns violators of rule infractions, such as loitering, smoking, or carrying forbidden articles, and apprehends or expels persons engaging in suspicious or criminal acts;
  • Permits authorized persons and regulates vehicle/pedestrian traffic at plant entrance to maintain orderly flow;
  • Drives radio equipped vehicle through client's establishment, checks alarm and locates sources of alarm;
  • Takes lead roles in responding to building emergencies and evacuations;
  • Sounds alarm or calls police or fire department by telephone in case of fire or presence of unauthorized persons;
  • Assists management and enforcement officers in emergency situations;
  • Writes investigation and automobile usage reports.


This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

Armed Security Officers are subject to supervision from Supervisors and/or Operations Manager.

Library Resource Officers must be proficient in recognizing and handling conflicts, infractions and emergencies. They must understand and appreciate the different roles of security and law enforcement personnel. They must also have a customer service mindset, excellent judgment in knowing when and how to apply Library policies to individual situations, and deploy de-escalation skills as appropriate.


High school diploma or general education degree (GED).

Applicants must have at least one requirement below

• Minimum of 3 years consecutive security experience.

• Prior Military experience.

• Prior Law Enforcement/First Responder Experience.


Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos using the English language. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.


Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.


Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.


Some posts may require an individual to have knowledge of Internet programs, Word Processing software or other software as required.


Where applicable: State Security Officer License; Certification in the use of weapons, State Armed License if required; Valid Drivers' License, if in driving position; CPR/AED/First Aid Certification may be needed.


Ability to pass a drug screen and criminal background check. Vehicle operators must be at least 25 years of age and have a driving record with no more than one moving violation.

Must also:

• Complete and pass all SC State armed courses (SLED).

• Complete and pass Active Shooter training.

• Complete and pass CPR/First Aid/AED training.

• Complete and pass CPI training.
