Job Description

JOB TITLE: Elder Nutrition Program Assistant Cook

WORK LOCATION: Elwha Tribal Center

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Title VI Nutrition Coordinator

POSITION STATUS: part-time, non-exempt

WORK SCHEDULE: 25 hours a week; 9:00 am to 2:00 pm

Overview: This position is responsible for assisting the head cook in the preparation and serving of food that meets the nutritional standards of USDA guidelines. The assistant cook will follow established sanitation, health, and personal hygiene standards and will coordinated with the Head Cook to serve the congregate meal and delivery of meals for homebound elders. The assistant cook will work with the Head Cook to ensure that all supplies and the kitchen facility are cleaned on a daily basis.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: helps prepare and serves group meals and home-delivered meals for seniors in the Senior Meal Program on a regular schedule; assists in maintaining kitchen and meal site inventory; assists in maintaining a safe, sanitary kitchen; immediately reports concerns and problems to the Supervisor.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Responsible for assisting in preparation nutritional meals using recipes appropriate for seniors on-site and for delivery, including USDA recommended daily requirements and those for special diets as needed or requested, with portions meeting Older Americans’ Act regulations;

Assist with the preparation and serving of congregate meals at the scheduled times.

Delivery of prepared meals to home-bound elders at the scheduled times;

In coordination with Title VI Nutrition Coordinator responsible for kitchen maintenance, including safety and sanitation meeting Public Health Department standards. Schedules an annual sanitation inspection by the Health Department;

Must maintain skills necessary to safely and efficiently operate the following equipment and machines used in the performance of this job: kitchen equipment, i.e., oven, stove, dishwasher, slicer, coffee machine, steamer, mixer, and chef’s knives, etc;

Comply with established sanitation standards, personal hygiene, and health standards.

Prepare food served using established production procedures and systems. Set table; serve or ensure proper serving of food for tray line or dining area;

Maintain a current food handlers card;

Ensure meal counts are kept through the participant sign-in sheets.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Ability to follow department and Tribal policies and procedures; follow instructions and adhere to prescribed routines and practices; effectively meet and communicate with senior citizens of the community and tribal community; make independent decision in food preparation; work closely with other agency personnel; communicate effectively orally; deal tactfully with the public; establish and maintain an efficient, orderly kitchen; develop appropriate menus and coordinate and prepare meals; establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors and peers; comprehend and follow instructions; make arithmetic calculations accurately at an acceptable speed; prioritize concurrent demands; work independently; maintain a courteous, helpful manner; work in a team environment; understand and explain the Senior Meal program and government regulations; and work with Public Health and meal program inspectors; use word processing [Microsoft Word or WordPerfect] and spreadsheet software [Microsoft Excel] programs

2. Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of group meal preparation and nutrition requirements for seniors; understanding of the requirements, regulations and standards for a Senior Meal Program and kitchen; understand and adhere to Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe personnel policies, Senior Meal Program regulations

3. Special Qualifications:

Valid Washington State Driver’s license and insurance as required by the Klallam Tribe and Washington State.

Reliable transportation.

Must maintain valid Washington State Food Handler’s Certification.

Must pass a criminal background check.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

High school graduate, or the equivalent, with at least one year of experience in meal preparation, preferably with experience in group meal preparation (60+ people);

Program-related education and training may be required and may be paid by the program.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, talk, see, hear, walk, handle objects and tools, and reach with arms and hands.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move objects up to 10 pounds, and occasionally lift or move objects up to 40 pounds, and is regularly required to sweep and mop floors and clean tables.

Must be able to comply with the LOWER ELWHA KLALLAM TRIBE’s Drug Free Workplace polices

Supports, cooperates with, and implements specific procedures and programs for:

A safe work practices; includes correct unsafe working conditions

Correct equipment repair and maintenance needs

Quality assurance and compliance with all regulatory requirements

Cooperates and work together with all co-workers; plan and complete job duties with minimal supervisory direction, including appropriate judgment.

Perform tasks which are supportive in nature to the essential functions of the job, but which may be altered or redesigned depending upon individual circumstances.

EVALUATION:
The Senior Meal Program Cook’s work is evaluated formally once each year by the Supervisor. Interim reviews are conducted through informal conferences and status reports.

FUNDING DURATION:
This position is funded by the Title VI Grant and earned funds. If funding ends, this position may be eliminated or downsized.
