Description

The Academy Museum will be the world’s premier institution dedicated to the art and science of movies. Located at Wilshire and Fairfax in Los Angeles, the Museum will be simultaneously immersive, experimental, educational, and entertaining. More than a museum, this dynamic film center will offer unparalleled experiences and insights into movies and movie-making.

This position will work as a shared member of the Exhibitions and Collections departments. Primary focus will be on framing, artworks installation in exhibition galleries, preparing and packing art loans and assisting with collections handling. You will report to the Exhibitions Installation Manager.

You Will:

  • Frame artwork, including cutting mattes, backing board, and plexi.
  • Move artworks between storage, exhibition, photography, shipping, and other departments employing methods from hand-carry to specialized mechanical means, depending on size, weight and condition.
  • Hang, level, and secure paintings, prints, drawings and photographs. Position, mount and secure large and small sculptures.
  • Assist with onsite mock-ups before exhibition opening.
  • Help with packing and unpacking of works of art for transport using established methods and materials.
  • Work with both temporary and special exhibitions to install and secure wall panels, platforms, display cases, pedestals, labels and signs.
  • Maintain art storage spaces; vacuum and dust art storage room and furniture; add or replace materials to protect or support works while in storage.
  • Assemble prefabricated cardboard trays and other module packing systems for warehousing artwork.
 
Position Requirements

You Have:

  • A Bachelor of Fine Arts, Arts, or related degree.
  • 3+ years of experience with framing, working with object or painting conservators while using workflow ergonomics and safety practices.
  • Knowledge of museum-level art handling practices and experience moving and handling fragile, heavy works of art with great care and delicacy.
  • Knowledge of archival materials and museum/gallery warehousing best practices.
  • Working knowledge of museum quality art installation hardware (object mounts, hooks, cleats, cable rigging, and security hardware) and exhibition lighting (light meters, gels, and filters). Gantry rigging experience and forklift certification is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of hand power tools (hammer drill and impact driver, circular saw, reciprocating saw, oscillating saw, router, grinder, and sander) and standard industrial woodworking equipment (table saw, band saw, belt/disc sander, planer, jointer, miter saw, and drill press).
  • Painting skills (roller and brush finishes, and knowledge of wood staining and finishing techniques).
  • Experience or willingness to be trained on OSHA approved safety equipment such as respirators and protective clothing.
  • Some experience with A/V equipment, interactive displays, and digital technology preferred.
  • Availability to work a flexible schedule including some weekends, evenings and holidays.

Physical Demands:

  • Climb and work on ladders, perform intermittent physical activity.
  • Work in an active construction site and in a gallery environment with paints, cleansers and other similar products and in spaces that collect dust.
