Lucas Systems, conveniently located at The Columbia Centre in Bracknell across the street from train and bus stations and 5 minutes walk from the new Lexicon centre, is looking to expand its top-notch software engineering team.

About the Role:

At Lucas, you will be working in a small dedicated team on projects where you will increasingly be responsible for designing, developing, documenting, and supporting major components of Lucas’ software products as we deliver transformational business change to our customers. As each project is started, the software configuration and the specific technology-set is defined – and no two customers are the same.

Lucas’ products include software that runs on a variety of leading-edge mobile devices and technologies from Motorola, Intermec, Apple, Samsung, Google, and Honeywell. Smart watches and NFC are already in use, and we are constantly pushing the boundaries – for example the potential use of smart glass is in R&D.

The Software Engineer will be involved, to varying degrees, in the following:

  • Designing and developing software using MS Visual Studio, C# and .NET
  • Designing and developing databases and software modules for Lucas’ software products
  • Extending MS Windows services, IIS, and multi-threaded server and mobile client applications
  • Designing and developing host interfaces using various transfer methods (e.g., socket, XML, JSON, etc.)
  • Debugging and tuning of applications using MS Visual Studio, MS SQL Server Profiler, and various in-house tools
  • Assisting Lucas’ software services/support team with troubleshooting, including developing fixes and enhancements for existing client deployments
Position Requirements


  • Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or related discipline
  • 2-3 years’ experience of software delivery, including the following specific skills:
  • C#:
    • Experience of writing enterprise level code
    • .NET 3.5 onwards
    • Visual Studio 2015 onwards
    • Silverlight 5
  • SQLServer 2012 onwards:
    • Schema Design Principles
    • Complex queries
    • Stored Procedures
    • Explain plans and performance tuning
    • Functions
    • Tables, Views, Indexes, Constraints
  • ORM & Data Access Technologies:
    • SQL
    • PetaPoco, or equivalent ORM
  • Commitment to producing high quality, well-designed and flexible applications
  • Solid troubleshooting, analytical, and organisational skills with attention to detail
  • Dedication to collaborative working style and desire to learn and adopt new technologies
  • Proven team worker, willing to ‘go the extra mile’ when necessary.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability and willingness occasionally to travel outside the UK and Europe


  • Version Control (preferably git)
  • Package Management and Build Tools (i.e. Nuget, Fake, TeamCity).
  • Repository Management i.e. Branching, Merging, Pull Requests (preferably BitBucket).
  • Agile development principles (SCRUM, Sprints etc.)
  • AngularJS & HTML5
  • Experience with Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) or other supply chain software solutions
  • Experience with mobile devices; Android development
  • Interest in, or understanding of warehouse and supply chain processes
