Description

The Internship program provides the Intern the opportunity to utilize the education, knowledge and experiences acquired during their undergraduate or graduate education. The fundamental purpose of an internship is to provide the student with practical experiences and an opportunity to enhance skills through active participation and involvement, direct exposure and engagement in a variety of functions. The Intern will assist DRNY with various projects supporting the legal representation of individuals with disabilities in New York. The Intern may research case-specific legal issues and assist with developing case related materials.

Essential Functions

The Intern performs a wide range of duties, including the following:

  • Provide critical research, analysis, and documentation for DRNY attorneys and advocates related to individual cases and systemic project work;
  • Attend client meetings, administrative and judicial hearings, agency meetings, depositions, and related events;
  • Accompany and support DRNY attorneys and advocates on monitoring and investigatory visits to facilities serving individuals with disabilities;
  • Proofread and provide content suggestions for written materials and documents;
  • Provide general support to the program attorneys and advocates, plus other duties and special projects as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Applicant must attend an accredited college;
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word/Excel/Outlook/PowerPoint);
  • Ability to write and present in a polished and professional manner;
  • Strong communication skills;
  • Excellent research skills;
  • Commitment to the mission and vision of DRNY;
  • Able to work independently;
  • Ability to prioritize and manage projects and tasks to meet deadlines.
  • Must have well-developed organizational skills and ability to manage multiple contemporaneous assignments;
  • Experience working with individuals with disabilities (preferred); and
  • Passionate about issues affecting individuals with disabilities (preferred).

Working Conditions

  • Work typically performed in an office environment with the majority of time spent working on a computer.
  • This internship operates in a professional office environment.
  • This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. Travel in the State will be as needed to provide firsthand experience procedures for this internship.
