Description

The Orthodontic Hygienist is responsible for working with the orthodontist for adjustments, bondings, debonding, impressions, cementing/delivering appliances and giving orthodontic instructions. A registered oral health professional who provides health promotion, education, and teaching. Works collaboratively with the Health Care Team to achieve and maintain optimal oral health.

This is a casual role (no guaranteed hours), typically working three days per month, on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Key Responsibilities

  • Greet client and accompany them from the waiting room to the treatment room
  • Follow established guidelines for client identification and privacy
  • Assist the family and/or client with lifting and transferring as required
  • Review client chart prior to appointment
  • Review medical information with client
  • Ensure that records and treatment plans are recorded
  • Ensure that consent forms for treatment and release of information are signed as required
  • Perform orthodontic hygienist duties as instructed by the orthodontist
  • Complete oral hygiene instruction and demonstration as required
  • Offer recommendations to clients and/or families for treatment and home care
  • Complete billing sheet, schedule next appointment and walk client to reception
  • Responsible for inventory and preventative maintenance of some equipment and supplies
  • Responsible for the process of outsourcing dental supplies for reprocessing
  • Actively participate and share information during morning rounds
  • Taking part in teaching and evaluating dental assistant and hygiene placement students
  • In partnership with clients/families and the interdisciplinary team, provides client and family-centred care which is goal directed, evidence based and outcome oriented
  • Support and respect the client/family's rights to make decisions based on their own values, beliefs and experiences
  • Base practice on established policies and procedures
  • Interact with members of the interdisciplinary team and community providers to ensure an integrated approach to service
  • Promote and support the physical, psychosocial and spiritual well being of clients and families
  • Collaborate with the client/family to plan, implement and evaluate care
  • Participate in organization-wide quality improvement activities and supports the maintenance of a safe and healthy work environment for staff, clients and families
  • Support the organization's strategic plan
  • Identify, share and participate in improvement initiatives
  • Comply with Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation contingency plan, emergency codes, standards and guidelines; participate in accreditation
  • Represent the program and organization internally and externally
  • Assist other team members when needed
  • Other duties as assigned or required.

Qualifications

Education

  • Registered Dental Hygienist with orthodontic hygienist training and experience
  • Update job knowledge and skills by completing WISE e-learning modules

Experience

  • 3 years Hygiene experience

  • Communicate in a timely, respectful and effective manner
  • Ability to ensure confidentiality in all aspects of the position

Certification/Licenses

  • CPR and HARP Certified
