POSITION SUMMARY: The preferred candidate will have a strong background in repairing fire alarm systems and also have experience performing electrical service/installation work in an institutional and/or commercial setting. Additionally, the candidate may be asked to perform a broad range of basic maintenance, repair, preventive and renovation work within other mechanical trade areas. This work will be related but not limited to HVAC, plumbing, controls, technology, etc.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Through a work order system, as well as direction from others, perform routine and emergency repairs, upgrades and renovation work related to the mechanical trades including but not limited to HVAC, electrical, plumbing, controls, technology, refrigeration, mechanical equipment and appliance repair, etc. The majority of assigned work will be limited to repairs relating to fire alarm, electrical, and HVAC controls systems.

  • Depending on workload requirement, assist structural operation's technicians with rough and finish carpentry, casework and woodworking, painting and finishing, masonry, locksmithing and other non-mechanical work including routine inspections. In addition, required to independently provide basic minor routine, preventive and emergency work within the structural trade areas.

  • Assist other divisions of the department as required – event set-up/set-downs, snow removal, grounds related work, trash removal, etc.

  • Participate in rotating one-week duration "on-call" system related to emergency repairs. Normal rotation is 1 week in 11 weeks.

  • Comply with all safety procedures and work guidelines encountered in the maintenance and operation of institutional buildings and built environment. Communicate issues to managers or supervisors; actively participate in training activities, seminars and safety meetings.

  • Position is considered "essential personnel" and is required to provide various duties and maintenance services 24 hours per day, 7 days per week as required during institutional closures, and duties related to emergencies, scheduled and unscheduled events.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or GED, valid Pennsylvania driver's license, 5 years' recent experience in the construction/maintenance fields or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must have experience servicing both electrical and fire alarm systems.

  • General knowledge and usage of hand and power tools.

  • Basic knowledge of: mechanical systems; equipment, procedures and materials required for system maintenance and construction.

  • Familiarity with structural systems and functions including but not limited to: carpentry, painting, masonry, etc.

  • Ability to perform manual task requiring above average physical strength.

  • Required to furnish and have working knowledge of a basic set of hand tools necessary for the performance of assigned duties.

  • Must be able to work from ladders, scaffolds, in ditches, freight elevators, small mechanical and structural spaces or other confining spaces

  • Must possess the ability to work under the direction of others, follow oral and written instructions, and work with other staff members as part of a team to create and maintain a positive, productive, safe and efficient work environment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/ or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/ or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; and not have allergic reactions to chemical substances or the more common environmental factors.

  • Occasionally required to remain standing or seated for long periods of time

  • Regularly required to maintain balance while walking, standing, crouching, or running

  • Routinely required to reach up and out with hands and arms

  • Regularly required to talk and hear; verbally express information or instructions

  • Regularly required to use hands to grasp objects, type, pick-up objects, move objects, or hold objects

  • Routinely required to stoop, kneel, crouch, and/ or crawl

  • Regularly required to climb stairs and/ or ladders

  • Occasionally required to lift 50 pounds or more and carry a distance of 10 feet or more

  • Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less) and adjustable focus

  • Ability to distinguish colors

  • Depth perception and the ability to judge distances and spatial relationships
