201005 - Library Clerk

Job Summary: Seeking a highly motivated and energetic individual to provide outstanding customer service and operations support at the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh-Main (Shelving and Materials Services). This customer service-focused role will ensure high quality user experiences and perform a variety of routine clerical tasks throughout the Library, in adherence to the CLP Philosophy of Service.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Greet customers and directing them to the appropriate staff members and resources to meet their information needs;
  • Perform circulation duties such as checking materials in and out, register customers for library cards, and provide orientation to library use;
  • Calculate and collect fines and fees; Handle monetary transactions, including cash payments and credit transactions;
  • Assists customers by locating and retrieving materials, demonstrating, and providing instruction in the use of library equipment, including computer;
  • Providing basic reference and readers' advisory service to all age levels in person and on the phone;
  • Resolve customer complaints with goal of customer satisfaction;
  • Re-shelve materials and revise shelves as needed;
  • Perform detailed data entry and other clerical duties such as typing, filing, copying, or sorting and distributing mail;
  • Process materials including verifying record, labeling, laminating, and bar coding;
  • Maintain orders, receive supplies from vendors, and distribute to branches and departments;
  • Strips, cleans, and processes a/v materials and containers for reuse;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent;
  • Superior internal and external customer service commitment and skills required;
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work well with public, supervisors, co-workers, and system wide;
  • The desire and ability to work with a diverse public and staff within diverse communities;
  • Familiarity with online catalog, MS Windows and MS Office, electronic databases, Internet searching, and experience with library circulation software preferred;
  • Bilingual or multilingual abilities a plus;
  • The physical ability to bend, stoop, stand for long periods of time, push heavy book trucks, and lift heavy loads (25+ pounds);
  • PA State Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance, FBI Fingerprint Criminal Records Check and Mandated Reporter Training upon offer of employment.
Full-Time/Part-Time Full-Time  
Work Hours 37.5 hours per week; Monday - Friday with some weekends.  
Salary $12.50 per hour
