Director of Homework Café

Position Summary:

This position is responsible for the Homework Café (HC) - the community space in our school where students socialize, complete independent work, and engage in group activities. Our population includes students struggling with learning differences, mental health issues, and ADHD, so skill in working with this community is at the heart of Homework Cafe leadership.

This is one of the hardest, but most satisfying jobs in the school (and also the most fun!), and every DHC has the amazing opportunity to bring their own spirit to the position and make the Homework Cafe culture their own.

They are active members of the school leadership team, providing support & representation for all student-involved and community based activities and decision making.

This person will manage the HC operations and staff, as well as sustain a comprehensive, well-rounded student social experience to maintain the role of the Homework Café as a dynamic, interactive, and intentional classroom with ongoing content-aligned initiatives, deliberate conversations, group learning activities, events, guest speakers, etc.

Requirements for this position include a Bachelor's degree and teaching and/or school administration experience. SPECIAL ED and or MENTAL HEALTH experience is a very significant plus.

First and foremost, they must enjoy teenagers and respect the personhood of the student while providing positive mentorship and maintaining consistent boundaries.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Create and facilitate daily student activities, student yearly events, community service events, and weekly student meetings.
  • Collaborate with Assistant Director and Department Heads to provide development opportunities for staff.
  • Collaborate with teachers and students to bring group academic displays, activities and programming into the shared spaces.
  • Support teachers to individualize their student’s assignments, using accommodations and modifications.
  • Liaison between students and teachers to ensure that students' independent work assignments are appropriate and aligned to student development needs.
  • Work with all students’ teaching teams to support student homework completion
  • Support students with executive function and study skill development
  • Assist in student positive disciplinary processes
  • Provide positive mentorship for all students.
  • Provide input for students’ quarterly goal setting.
  • Maintain regular communication with all stakeholders ( parents/teachers/leadership) to share successes and develop strategies to ensure academic success.
  • Facilitate the administration of formal assessment tools and surveys
  • Provide facility and strategic support for all campus events
  • Monitor cleanliness, organization, and productivity of the Homework Cafe throughout the day.
  • Support students toward the completion of a broad range of assignments.
  • Manage Homework Café® teaching team and ensure the HC is staffed appropriately, providing adequate student support.
  • Manage inventory of and student access to resources such as textbooks & technology.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Patience and problem solving approach when addressing issues.
