POSITION SUMMARY: BASIC FUNCTION

 

The Data Center Facility Operations (DCFO) Technician provides basic support functions for the operations and maintenance activities on the data center electrical, mechanical, control, and fire life safety systems.

 

The DCFO Technician is responsible for understanding and following the processes governing the performance of work in the data center facility environment, including all applicable safety and operational work procedures.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs building rounds and inspections
  • Monitors Building Management Systems
  • Responds to abnormal facility conditions, incidents and emergencies using established operating procedures
  • Performs and assists in the performance of site operations and maintenance procedures
  • Creates and updates work orders
  • Researches and orders required tools, materials and consumables
  • Writes technical procedures for maintenance and repairs
  • Escorts and supervises external vendors and contractors
  • Assists in the creation of new work procedures in areas of expertise
  • Provides feedback on the effectiveness of existing processes and procedures
  • Performs Service Operations as required i.e., Tape Rotation, Rack and Stack of equipment, inventory hardware, power cycle devices, patch cable install/removal
  • Pursues qualification for higher level technical certifications
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Regular, predictable attendance is essential to satisfactory performance

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Possess an understanding of one or more of the mechanical, electrical, control and fire life safety systems of the type used in a data center environment including, but not limited to the following: electrical distribution, mechanical and electrical controls, diesel generators, backup power systems, HVAC systems, fire detection and suppression systems.
  • Working knowledge of industrial safety best practices (i.e. lockout/tag out, arc flash protection, OSHA and state regulations)
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience installing, maintaining, and/or troubleshooting industrial systems such as:
    • Chilled water systems
    • Centrifugal chillers
    • Cooling towers
    • Indirect air exchange heat wheel systems
    • Heat exchangers
    • Water Treatment Systems
    • VFD’s and pumps
    • HVAC equipment
    • Air handlers
    • Humidification systems
    • Water heaters
    • Water/Air filters
    • BMS and PLC Controls
    • Diesel generators
    • Fuel/oil systems
    • Medium and low voltage electrical distribution
    • Grounding and lightning protection systems
    • UPS systems
    • Fire detection and suppression systems
  • Good communication skills, both written and oral
  • Ability to communicate effectively with customers and internal staff, and work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Ability to learn quickly and address issues as they arise
  • Ability to operate in a rigorous process-driven environment
  • Ability to coordinate and communicate with outside vendors and contractors
  • Ability to logically analyze and solve problems
  • Ability to operate Hand and Machine Tools (hammer, drill, saw, etc.)
  • Ability to operate test and measurement tools, such as a multi-meter or flowmeter
  • Familiarity with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Possess critical thinking and complex problem solving skills

 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma required
  • Associate’s Degree or equivalent education and/or work experience and a minimum of 2 years in an industrial mechanical/electrical position
  • Data center or other critical facility environment work experience is desired
  • Possession of CPR/First Aid/AED and NFPA70E certification or the ability to obtain after hire
  • Possession of an OSHA approved forklift certification or the ability to obtain one after hire

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Primarily walking, standing, and bending with some sitting
  • Close visual work on a computer terminal
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate any required equipment as well as to operate computer keyboard, mouse, and other technical instruments
  • Able to lift and carry heavy equipment, up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to climb ladders and work on raised platform

 

WORK CONDITIONS

  • Data Center environment with varying temperatures and loud noises
  • Potential extensive daily usage of workstation or computer
  • Must work on-site; no telecommuting permitted
