General Summary

The Mechanical Engineer will participate in the design and development of a wide variety of product lines from concept to engineering release. Perform classical engineering analysis on designs using both conventional engineering analysis methods and through computer simulation. Assist in producing detail engineering and assembly drawings for manufacturing.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develops mechanical and electromechanical products by studying customer and project requirements by researching manufacturing and assembly methods and materials and soliciting observations from operators.
  • Defines, generates and reviews project requirements.
  • Evaluates Statements of Work, develops a design and takes it from concept stage to LRIP and eventually full production while meeting project requirements.
  • Evaluates mechanical and electro-mechanical systems and products by applying principles of mechanics, thermodynamics, hydraulics, heat transfer, and materials
  • Communicates and collaborates effectively and efficiently with cross-functional teams on design direction and requirements in order to achieve project goals.
  • Works with hardware, software and engineering personnel providing technical support and oversight of mechanical design during product development phase.
  • Specifies and qualifies mechanical and electro-mechanical components.
  • Performs tolerance analysis to ensure assemblies fit, especially in higher production quantities, while keeping costs at a minimum.
  • Responsible for selecting proper materials and finishes to meet program requirements.
  • Analyzes field failures, resolving technical related issues.
  • Participates in peer reviews and project reviews such as PDR and CDR.
  • Interfaces with vendors and subcontractors to answer technical questions and solve issues slowing progress.
  • Performs Stress, Thermal, Vibration and Shock analyses using SolidWorks Simulation.
  • Responsible for maintaining the product documentation over the entire lifecycle, including change paperwork and configuration change boards.
  • Works to and meets Department of Defense (DOD) and ASME standards.

Qualifications

  • Fluent in 3D modeling and drafting using SolidWorks.
  • Experience adhering to ASME Y14.100 and ASME Y14.5 standards.
  • Experienced in taking a product design from concept to production.
  • Good knowledge of materials and their properties.
  • Experience with sheet metal design and welding.
  • Experience in designing to meet Environmental requirements such as shock, vibration, thermal, humidity, altitude, salt/fog, etc per MIL-STD-810.
  • Experience designing to meet Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) requirements.
  • Experienced with rapid prototyping and 3D printing technology to generate parts for evaluation.
  • Thorough understanding of Engineering Change Order system.
  • Broad knowledge in mechanical design including sheet metal design, plastic injection molded part design and hydraulic motion design.
  • 7+ years of experience of hands on mechanical design engineering experience.
  • Must be a US person.

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) or related field from four-year college is required, Masters in Mechanical Engineering (MSME) or related field is preferred
  • 5+ years experience in complex part and assembly design
  • 5+ years 3-D Modeling experience with Solidworks
