Recovery Support Specialist

The Recovery Support Specialist (RSS) performs rehabilitation and support functions and assists in treatment. He or she provides substance abuse services, education, support and consultation to families. And crisis intervention under the clinical supervision of staff with professional degrees. The RSS performs direction and coordinating support activities that promote good physical health; provides peer support services; serves as a client advocate; provides information and peer support for clients in emergency, outpatient or inpatient settings. He or she performs a wide range of tasks to assist clients in regaining control of their lives and recovery processes. Recovery Support Specialists are classified into Levels (Recovery Support Specialist I, Recovery Support Specialist II, etc.) by Red Rock, depending on experience and credentials, and compensated accordingly.


  • Facilitates activities in areas that include nutrition, exercise managing physical health concerns (examples include but are not limited to: heart disease, diabetes, cholesterol).
  • Provides medication support regarding the effects that medication may have on physical health.
  • Assists clients in developing individual physical wellness plans and implementation assistance and support.
  • Teaches and mentors the value of every individual's recovery experience, models effective coping techniques and self-help strategies, assists service recipients in articulating personal goals for recovery and in determining the objectives needed to reach his/her recovery goals.
  • Proactively engages clients and possesses communication skills/ability to transfer new concepts, ideas, and insight to others.
  • Assists in setting up and sustaining self-help (mutual support) groups.
  • Supports clients in using a WRAP - Wellness Recovery Action Plan.
  • Assists in creating a Safety Plan and Psychiatric Advanced Directive as needed.
  • Utilizes and teaches problem solving techniques with clients as well as how to identify and combat negative self-talk and fears.
  • Supports the vocational choices of clients and assists him/her in overcoming job-related anxiety.
  • Assists in building social skills in the community that will enhance quality of life and support the development of natural support systems.
  • Assists other staff in identifying program and service environments that are conducive to recovery.
  • Attends treatment team and program development meetings to ensure the presence of the client voice and to promote the use of self-directed recovery tools.
  • Possesses knowledge about various mental health settings and ancillary services (i.e. Social Security, housing services, advocacy organizations, etc.).
  • Maintains core competencies in relation to working with co-occurring disorders through continuing education and implementing skills into all aspects of treatment.
  • Provides and advocates for effective recovery oriented services, assists clients in obtaining services that suit that individual's recovery needs, informs clients about community and natural supports and how to utilize these in the recovery process, assists clients in developing empowerment skills through self-advocacy.
  • Attends staff meetings, workshops, and seminars to learn agency policy, rules, regulations, and procedures; participates in on-going in-service training as well as required external training.
  • Attends continuing education assemblies when offered by/approved by the Office of Client Affairs.
  • Develops and shares recovery-oriented material with other RSS's at client-specific continuing education trainings.
  • RSS's are encouraged to develop specific competencies which will enhance their work skills and abilities. Identified tasks include (but are not limited to): becoming a trained facilitator of Double Trouble in Recovery (DTR), becoming a trained facilitator of Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) and pursuing the USPRA credential of Certified Psychiatric Rehabilitation Practitioner (CPRP).
  • Assists in the development and implementation of programmatic goals and objectives.
  • Supports and assists with the facilitation of Care Plans for consumers within the Red Rock Health Team.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements


  • Recovery Support Specialist I: Qualifications listed below.
  • Recovery Support Specialist II: Employed at Red Rock for 4 years as a RSS and meets job description competencies.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum one year participation in local or national client advocacy or knowledge in the area of mental health recovery
  • Must be a current or former client of mental health services
  • Successful completion of the ODMHSAS Recover Support Provider Training
  • Current ODMHSAS Recover Support Provider certification preferred
  • Eligibility to pursue Case Management Certification preferred.
  • Valid Oklahoma Driver’s License, clean driving record, transportation
  • General skill in exercising independent judgment, tact, patience, and understanding; maintaining effective working relationships with clients, other staff, and the community
  • Must complete all in-service and external training requirements
