The Director, Business Development will be strategically focused on developing and executing strategies to drive the sustainable growth of new partnerships and the deepening of NTCs current partnerships. In close partnership with the Senior Director, Special Projects, the Director, Business Development will collaborate with Clients and internal departments, (Program Delivery, Strategic Partnerships, Technology Solutions, Finance, Legal, and Product) to drive business development strategy and processes, support contract budget development, be accountable for renewal contract pipeline reporting and forecasts, and measure and ensure partner success.

  • Has strong analytical skills. This person will enjoy using data. They will be able to thoroughly and accurately read, understand, analyze and summarize data, and extrapolate trends in order to draw conclusions and make recommendations.
  • Has the ability to zoom in and out. This person will prioritize their day-to-day work but will also be able to zoom out to serve as a strategic thought partner to internal team members. They will help drive strategy while simultaneously managing the details.
  • Has strong project management skills. The person in this role will need strong systems to keep track of large amounts of information and competing priorities. They will be responsible for making sure programs are on track to meet revenue goals while also having a pulse on expenses and forecasts to directly support budgets.
  • Has the ability to motivate and influence others. This person will possess strong verbal and written communication skills in order to motivate and influence others. This includes managing up and across teams effectively. They share knowledge generously with peers and they know where internal and external resources are to pull together content as needed for the drafting of proposals. They will be comfortable drafting narratives for client-facing proposals to support business development.
  • Enjoys making the complex simple. This person will be responsible for deciphering complex information and making it digestible and actionable via written and verbal communication.

Responsibilities & Essential Functions

The following is an overview of the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. The employee may perform other duties as required.

  • Proactively research, identify and track potential business development opportunities
  • Engage in strategic cultivation of current and potential partners to identify partner needs and support the design of proposals that address partner needs
  • In collaboration with the finance department, support the development of contract budgets and monitor the delivery of services against contract budgets
  • Keep abreast of state policy and conditions that impact NTC’s work
  • Partner with the Business Office to ensure a positive client experience with respect to, but not exclusively, the contracting process and invoicing
  • Ensure NTC’s partners experience the highest level of customer service in all NTC touchpoints
  • Maintain data integrity in key systems
  • Collaborate across NTC functions (Finance, Legal, Product, Development, etc…) to drive agile process improvement
  • Continue to build the capacity and business development acumen of Program staff
  • Prepare presentations for internal and external audiences. This will usually involve designing highly compelling presentations for department-wide meetings and conferences.
  • Be a master of execution and project management, holding the team accountable and ensuring that deadlines are met across high-priority, cross-functional projects.
  • Support business development and proposal development strategy
  • Oversee the Request for Proposal (RFP) process to ensure that NTC is submitting timely, competitive bids to potential partner districts.

Participate in events such as NPLN, Symposium, key conferences, and other opportunities to represent NTC and

Position Requirements


  • Bachelor's degree required (in communications, business, finance, or education preferred).
  • 7+ years of project management experience required, especially in complex, sometimes uncertain, environments and at least 2+ years experience writing professional grants and/or reports.
  • Experience working in K-12 education, either in school districts or with other education-focused organizations
  • Proven cultivation and relationship management experience of high leverage clients at a national program level and/or with deep local/regional ties
  • Excellent written, presentation, and verbal communications at the executive level required
  • Experience working with Salesforce (preferred)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Exhibit a “can-do” customer-centric attitude, displaying a high level of enthusiasm and passion for team and company objectives and achievements
  • Ability to effectively engage a variety of stakeholders, including district leaders, funders, and media
  • Ability to work strategically and across departments
  • Proactive relationship builder with an eye towards understanding challenges and how to provide solutions for those challenges
  • Sensitivity to diversity, equity, and inclusion as it presents itself in K-12 education
