We have five locations spanning the eastern Twin Cities of Minnesota and western Wisconsin. Position Summary

Associated Eye Care is currently seeking an Ophthalmic Assistant. Ophthalmic Assistants prepare the patient to see the doctor by performing various tests, asking patients about their complaints and medical history, and explaining what is next in the exam process. Candidates must have the ability to travel to the practice's five locations located in the East Metro and Western Wisconsin.

Essential Functions

  • Provide excellent customer service to patients and teammates
  • Responds appropriately and promptly to patient questions within scope of role
  • Efficiently and accurately completes patient history and pre-testing for comprehensive and sub-specialty optometrists and ophthalmologists including, but not limited to tonometry, visual acuity, insertion of appropriate eye drops, pupil function, muscle evaluation, confrontational visual fields, dry eye testing, visual field testing, fundus photos and OCT imaging.
  • Accurately document information gathered during exam in accordance with AEC's procedures and policies in NextGen EHR
  • Assists provider in meeting governmental and coding requirements
  • Participate in regular team meetings to ensure effective team performance and advance inter-department communications; this may require afterhours work
  • Responsible for ongoing professional self-development

Other Essential Functions & Requirements

  • Must be willing and able to work a variety of hours and work in the various locations as needed. The locations include Hudson, Hugo, New Richmond, Stillwater, Woodbury and any partner facility
  • Must present self at the workstation, ready for work, at the scheduled time
  • Participates in department and company meetings, as requested
  • Performs other duties as assigned

This position will be filled as an Ophthalmic Assistant, or Clinical Assistant, dependent upon the qualifications of the successful candidate.

Position Requirements

Education & Licensing

  • High School Diploma, or equivalent, required
  • COA preferred


  • 1-2 years’ experience in an ophthalmology or optometry practice preferred
  • 1-2 years’ experience with previous electronic medical record experience (NextGen) preferred

  • Ability to multi-task and adhere to deadlines when faced with multiple interruptions and sometimes stressful situations
  • Can confidently establish priorities based on workload, focusing on attention to detail and accuracy
  • Capacity to analyze and problem-solve issues in order to identify areas of process improvement and increase efficiencies
  • Able to work independently and handle and resolve problems on own, but also know when to collaborate with staff and be a team player
  • Ability to assess the importance and relevance of information and effectively and efficiently share information and relevant detail to the appropriate persons
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with an ability to develop and foster relationships with employees and clients at all levels of the organization; ability to give consistent and concise direction/communication to team members; ability to lead, motivate, educate, manage and train teams
  • Ability to operate successfully with strategic and tactical level issues and to effectively manage multiple and diverse issues; good judgment with the ability to make timely and sound decisions based on data and business acumen
  • Courteous and professional demeanor while demonstrating enthusiasm and commitment to company vision and mission
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality utilizing HIPAA guidelines and maintain compliance with OSHA rules
  • Advanced computer skills, including Word and Excel and a willingness to learn new software programs
