SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Reports to the Director of Academic Advising and Support Services.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Student workers as appropriate

POSITION SUMMARY: The transitions advisor will provide advising support to undergraduate students, with a special emphasis on transfer and adult students. The advisor will build effective relationships with Moravian faculty, staff, administrators, students, and alumni in relevant areas. This position will also work to help maintain and share records effectively with relevant constituents and help the institution assess the success of targeted student populations at the College.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Strategy and Planning

  1. Work with Student Success team and appropriate departments for continuous improvement in supporting student success, degree completion, and career planning.
  2. Coordinate with the appropriate campus faculty, the Student Success Team, and the Career and Civic Engagement Center to support targeted students through activities such as
    1. Group advising sessions or individual information meetings for current students,
    2. Informational programming and discussions for current students to support academic success and career planning, and
    3. Collaboration with relevant stakeholders on orientation programming for new transfer students and adult learners, as needed.

General advising support

  1. Serve as a first-year advisor and provide transition support for transfer student advisors.
  2. Collaborate on training for new and continuing academic advisors serving transfer and adult students.
  3. Provide support for onboarding incoming first-year students, including the process of building course schedules and providing support for the Summer FAIR orientation program.
  4. Develop and maintain online resources related to orientation and advising for targeted populations and support collaborative development of analogous resources for all students.

Support for Graduate Planning

  1. Coordinate student applicant interviews or mock interviews, the collection of individual letters of recommendation, and the generation of other application materials for students intending graduate study in humanities and social science fields, including law school.
  2. Provide group and individual instructional support related to graduate school preparation for application components and standardized tests, as appropriate.
  3. Support efforts of Student Success Team and campus student success efforts as needed.

Data analysis and assessment

  1. Conduct assessment of the success of advising-related programming for transfer and adult students to allow for data-informed adjustments to programming.
  2. Assess the effectiveness of graduate school support mechanisms for humanities and social science students pursuing advanced degrees.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree in a related field or Master's degree in higher education, student affairs, education and an undergraduate degree in a related field.

  • Excellent organizational, written, verbal, and presentation skills are required.

  • A broad knowledge of advising practices and strategies and experience as an academic advisor; experience with orientation programming preferred.

  • Experience with technology and analytics in a student information system, such as Jenzabar (or Banner or PeopleSoft).

  • Ability to work successfully with diverse populations and understand the unique challenges faced by diverse populations.

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, as needed; this may include occasional work on evenings or weekends.
