SUMMARY
The City of South Bend is seeking an experienced professional with a background in PR, marketing, journalism, or other communications field. With this role, individuals have the opportunity to improve the South Bend Police Department and community through the development of strong relationships within the community, police department, and City in a demanding environment.

The Digital Communication & Multimedia Coordinator is the primary contact and liaison between the South Bend Police Department and the media. Under limited direction, this role assists, develops, coordinates, and relays communication-related to the South Bend Police Department between various departments within the City of South Bend, the media, and multiple stakeholders within the community. Also, this role manages the content of the South Bend Police Department's social media, develops marketing materials, and coordinates interviews between the South Bend Police Department and local news outlets. In addition, this role provides training to current officers and recruits related to the use of social media and how to interact with the media.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This list represents the types of duties required by the position. Other duties may be assigned as reasonably expected.
• Represent the South Bend Police Department at various events, meetings, business, and other public or private engagements.
• Advise the South Bend Police Department administration and staff on the effect actions and activities have in the media.
• As a South Bend Police Department spokesperson, work closely with all units within the department as well as the City of South Bend.
• Advise administration in message development while adhering to the values of the South Bend Police Department and City of South Bend.
• Develop and implement communication activities to enhance awareness of South Bend Police Department outreach and inreach.
• Screen, refer to appropriate staff or respond to daily inquiries from the press.
• Coordinate all meetings with specialty units and media to ensure compelling and informative news information.
• Coordinate meetings, media relations opportunities, and the release of special events and public safety information from the Police Department. Examples may include press releases, stories, public service announcements, or news articles.
• Develop South Bend Police Department public relations programs and marketing to promote South Bend Police Department programs, services, and events.
• Work with the South Bend Police Department administration to manage all social media updates and feeds.
• Improve and seek best practices to increase and maximize the South Bend Police Department's digital presence.
• Provide training to current officers, non-sworn personnel and recruits regarding social media and media interaction.
• Provide stories and updates related to the Police Department's various divisions.
• Responsible for live feed streaming events, ceremonies, and training.
• Research police body camera/software and best practices.
• Assist with South Bend Police Department branding.
• Must learn and adhere to policy and procedures related to information use and disclosure.
• Maintain appropriate documentation in accordance with legal and departmental requirements; testify in court if/when necessary.
• Have a thorough knowledge of state and federal laws involving public records.
• Gather video and pictures for use in branding, social media, or other City needs.
• Shoot and edit videos for training, promotional materials, or other City needs.
• Manage the department website and assist, coordinate or direct some events or special events.
• Attend and participate in weekly [at minimum] command staff meetings.
• Assist in writing commendation and appreciation letters to sworn and non-sworn department personnel as well as community members and/or businesses.
• Assume additional responsibilities as directed or as delegated.

Position Requirements

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Background in videography a must.
• Bachelor’s Degree in media, PR, journalism, communication, or related field preferred.
• Prior experience in PR, journalism, news media, or related field preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
• Ability to communicate effectively, orally, and in writing.
• Ability to quickly and successfully interpret and understand information.
• High level of independent judgment and decision-making abilities.
• Ability to speak and train others in large groups, in addition to one-on-one training.
• Knowledge of computer operations and general office practices and procedures.
• Must be able to attend conferences and trainings as requested or required.
• Must maintain a felony-free record.
• Knowledge of confidentiality; all areas hold highly sensitive material.
• Ability to shoot and edit video.
• Strong knowledge of AP style writing, speaking, and grammar appropriate for use in various media outlets.
• Must be able to attend to requests at various days and times. Even before or after work hours.
• Ability to work, coordinate, develop, and manage relationships across all levels.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
• Valid Driver’s License required.

EQUIPMENT
Computer, Video Camera, Adobe Software Suite, Microsoft Office Suite, Digital Camera, various video equipment, various audio equipment, and other equipment typically found in an office environment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work may be performed indoors and outdoors. Conditions indoors will be in a temperature-controlled environment. The entire office is smoke-free. While working outdoors, the employee may be exposed to changing weather conditions. Occasional work outside of standard office hours may be required. There is a potential for exposure to graphic and/or disturbing information and imagery.
