About the Organization The mission of Fenway Health is to enhance the wellbeing of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBTQIA+) community and all people in our neighborhoods and beyond through access to the highest quality health care, education, research, and advocacy. Fenway Health was founded in 1971 and has grown from a less than 10 person operation in the basement of a building near the Boston Fens to one of the largest LGBT-focused organizations in the world. It consists of three main centers:

• Fenway Community Health Center, our clinical arm, which is a federally qualified health center that operates three clinic sites (Fenway:1340, Fenway:South End, and the Sidney Borum, Jr. Health Center) in the Boston area and provides over 30,000 patients with primary and specialty medical care, behavioral health care, optometry care, and dental care;

• The Fenway Institute, our research/training/education/policy development arm, which houses numerous research initiatives as well as the National LGBT Education Project, the LGBT Aging Project, the National Center for Innovation in HIV Care, and the Center for Population Research in LGBT Health; and

• AIDS Action, our HIV/AIDS service organization, which provides nonclinical services (case management, housing and legal assistance, outreach, peer support) to people living with HIV/AIDS and operates numerous programs focusing on HIV/STD prevention/testing/treatment, including the Access (drug user health program), TransCEND (transgender peer support and risk reduction program), and Youth on Fire (drop-in center for homeless and street-involved youth) programs.

Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator and Project Director, the Research Assistant (RA) assists with the implementation of a study aiming to advance methods to measure and analyze multiple types of discrimination for population health research.

This position may require a flexible working schedule with some evening and weekend hours.

  1. Implements recruitment efforts that lead to study participation
  • Supports study recruitment efforts by identifying and establishing recruitment opportunities
  • Mails study recruitment materials to identified candidates
  • Liaises with other Fenway departments to share study information
  • Screens potential participants as specified by study protocol
  • Updates and maintains recruitment and screening calendars, databases, and study documentation
  1. Arranges and conducts study visits with study participants as specified by study protocol
  • Assesses and documents eligibility and participation status of candidates and arranges study visits with potential participants
  • Facilitates in-person study visits by administering study surveys and protocols
  • Obtains participants height and weight measurements, as needed
  • Monitors the study website to determine completion of online protocols
  • Attends regular team meetings with cross-site study staff
  1. Assists with maintaining regulatory procedures and developing of study materials
  • Assists in revision of study-related materials, including protocol, informed consent, study assessments, recruitment/retention materials, and IRB specific materials as needed
  • Monitors the quality of collected data, and participates in regular data quality monitoring activities
  1. Assists in the development of research projects and publication of study findings
  • Assists with the publication of research findings through editing, writing, and preparation of manuscripts and conference presentations, as needed
  • Assists with grant writing and study progress reports, as needed
  1. Meets Agency Participatory Expectations
  • Adheres to all agency and departmental policies and procedures
  • Participates in quality assessment and improvement activities as requested
  • Adheres to the highest principles of patient and client confidentiality
  • Adheres to established safety policies, procedures and precautions; identifies potential or actual unsafe situations in the environment and takes measures to rectify the situation
  • Attends all required meetings, in-services and professional trainings
  • Maintains professional competence necessary to perform job responsibilities; maintains and provides agency with records of continuing education activities
  • Serves on agency committees and in professional organizations when requested
  1. Performs other related duties as required
  • Assisting with any administrative or research-related tasks across the Epidemiology team

Position Requirements


  • Bachelor’s degree in social science research or related field preferred


  • Good interpersonal and communication (written and verbal) skills
  • Strong attention to detail, superior work ethic, professionalism and organizational skills
  • Strong computer skills (Microsoft Word, Power-Point, Excel, Email) required with the willingness to master new software applications and technologies

Preferred Experience & Skills:

  • Prior experience conducting human subjects research highly preferred
  • Experience with Microsoft Access, MediaLab, and Qualtrics preferred
  • Experience working in an ethnically, culturally, and racially diverse environment preferred
