Building Science Specialist

Position Summary

Under general supervision, the Building Science Specialist provides Slipstream with energy conservation measure and program eligibility expertise.

Primary and Essential Responsibilities

  1. Spend majority of time conducting quality assurance site visits for whole house, emergency heating system replacements and prescriptive energy conservation measures including ratings. Verify the compliance of retrofit work performed based on work plans and standards, conduct audits and inspections using diagnostic equipment, and specify corrective actions to achieve whole house performance. This includes collecting and analyzing data, evaluating and inspecting the work of providers and contractors. Based on findings create reports to document site visits.
  2. Provide technical training and mentoring for energy efficiency professionals on installation of measures, diagnostic testing, combustion safety testing, building data collection and computerized modeling software. Deliver classroom training for energy efficiency professionals on installation of measures, diagnostic testing, combustion safety testing, building data collections and computerized modeling software. Train and/or proctor for Building Science Certifications including Rater Certification.
  3. Provide technical support related to building science expertise to internal and external customers.
  4. Conduct or assist in the implementation of building science research activities. This includes collecting and analyzing data, summarizing results, and preparing reports.
  5. Provide information for and review of data for monthly and other reports as requested by the program and/or project manager.
  6. Actively participate as a member of assigned workgroups
  7. These responsibilities are not all inclusive and other duties may be assigned from time-to-time


Position Requirements


Building Performance Institute (BPI) Home Energy Professional (HEP) Quality Control Inspector (QCI) certified OR the ability to become certified upon hire


  • Demonstrated use of residential building science best practices
  • Proven ability to perform energy assessments and diagnostic testing related to, but not limited to, worst case draft, heating system efficiency and air flow, IR scanning, pressure diagnostics, carbon monoxide analysis, and blower door testing
  • Works with weatherization management and field staff, insulation contractors and HVAC contractors
  • Ability to provide technical support to contractors and program providers
  • Demonstrate solid verbal & written communication & report writing skills
  • Exhibit the ability to build professional relationships with teams, vendor, client & partner
  • Project management experience to include but not limited to: project design implementation, facilitation for large projects & ensuring deadlines are met.


  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience
  • Minimum 3 years of work-related experience
  • BPI HEP QCI certification
  • Basic proficiency in using Microsoft Office Suite
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
  • Fluency in Spanish is a plus

  • Occasionally lift or move 35 lbs

  • Ability to travel up to 50% of the time
