System Administrator (Journey Level) ( Glenwood Springs)

This is an non-exempt position that repoets to the Chief Information Officer. The hiring range for this position is: $24.56 - $30.70 hourly.

General Purpose:

Under general supervision, performs intermediate hardware and virtual server setup, installation, and configuration of the operating system, new releases, upgrades, and patches. Creates and manages user directories and files on the server platforms. Executes a backup and recovery process for all data systems. Assists in capacity planning and determines equipment specifications for purchase. Assists in maintaining the day-to-day operations of servers, hardware, operating systems, security, and data protection. Monitors, tunes, diagnoses and resolves intermediate operating system problems. Configures and defines system resources.

Essential Functions:

  1. System Management (60%)
    1. Install and maintain county systems
      1. Work with the System Administrator to determine the general system requirements, specifications, and project plans.
      2. Assist with determining the impact of modifications and enhancements on countywide systems.
      3. Assist with determining county systems specifications and requirements.
      4. Establish timelines for system changes, patches, and upgrades.
      5. Assist users with system troubleshooting.
      6. Document the architecture of the county’s systems.
      7. Coordinate with County departments, offices, and staff regarding system modifications.
      8. Represent department interests in county capital projects.
      9. Assist with overall data center design strategy.
      10. Work with the network administrator as required.
      11. Performs other duties of a similar or related level and assists with special projects as necessary or assigned.
    2. Administer the County's systems
      1. Assist in establishing system policies, procedures, and standards.
      2. Ensure system standards and security are consistent with national and international standards authorities, and the State of Colorado standards for system hardware.
      3. Enforce county policies and standards related to county systems.
      4. Assist with determining appropriate methods, techniques, and tools for managing county systems.
      5. Utilize system information to ensure optimal system performance.
      6. Identify, document, and troubleshoot system-related problems.
      7. Assist other systems staff in determining the physical or logical changes to the system architecture.
      8. Ensure the configuration of system devices supports the overall system architecture and established security policies.
      9. Assist other staff with the investigation of system security violations and the implementation of system security policies.
      10. Evaluate new technologies and recommend system changes that are necessary to accommodate new system technologies.
      11. Maintain system devices as assigned.
      12. Monitor the performance of system devices.
      13. Build and maintain disaster recovery and continuation of operations plan documents.
  1. Service Desk (40%)

  1. Provides technical support for the Board of County Commissioners (BoCC) and their public meetings, and for end users of the BoCC conference and meeting sites.
  2. Troubleshoots, diagnoses, reports on, and resolves problems associated with applicable information technology resources and/or telecommunications equipment in assigned area of responsibility.
  3. Participates in designing, setting up, maintaining, planning, and implementing information technology, audio/visual and/or telecommunications hardware, software, solutions, and databases.
  4. Assists with creation, modification and maintenance of domain users and file server shares within a Microsoft server environment.
  5. Assist with maintenance of Active Directory, including group policy management and new user provisioning and management.
  6. Provides Help Desk, telephone and/or on-site support and on-going troubleshooting assistance to employees regarding information technology and/or telecommunications hardware, software, systems, and/or other related items.
  7. Provides telecommunications support including cabling and wireless access point connectivity and cellular/smart phone support.
  8. Provides personal computer patches and updates as required.
  9. Performs knowledge base maintenance as required.

Job Qualifications:

Position Requirements

Minimum Education: A Bachelor’s Degree in computer science, information systems, technology preferred. Certified systems administration training or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Minimum Experience: Minimum experience with a degree; 2 years of experience managing complex data centers and virtualized environment, experience installing and maintaining operating systems and participating in IT projects. Minimum experience without a degree; Four years of experience managing complex data centers and virtualized environment, experience installing and maintaining operating systems and participating in IT projects.
