Our EMPOWER After School Program has an immediate opportunity for a Part-Time Van Driver to join their team in New Bern, NC. This position will work Tuesday-Thursday 8:00am-10:00am and then 1:00pm-3:00pm. If you meet the requirements below and are available to commit to an ongoing PT schedule then come join our team!


Under the general supervision of the Site / Assistant Site Director, the van driver is responsible for safely transporting children with and without disabilities to and from childcare and from childcare to planned outings or field trips. Van driver is also responsible for general maintenance of the van and compliance with rules and regulations governing the transportation of young children.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Transports assigned children from home to school following specific, regularly scheduled routes and in accordance with established procedures for safe pick-up and delivery.
  • Ensures that all individuals supported exit the vehicle safely and are received on site by direct care staff.
  • Maintains a current list of individuals supported who are being transported on Empower Transportation Log and documents attendance when boarding and exiting children from the van ensuring all children are accounted for and no one is left behind.
  • Ensures that current emergency contact and treatment authorization information for each individual supported, including identifying information with parental authorization for emergency treatment, is accessible on the vehicle.
  • Transports individuals served and staff to planned outing or field trip destinations according to established procedures.
  • Inspects exterior and interior of the vehicle at beginning of each shift for properly operating headlights, turn signals, brake lights, interior courtesy lamps, mirrors adjustment, air conditioning or heating, warning lamps, mirror adjustments, properly inflated tires, windshield wipers, vehicle damage prior to moving vehicle.
  • Ensures vehicle is adequately fueled for each trip.
  • Ensures the vehicle is stocked with a fully charged fire extinguisher, functional spare tire, and first aid kit.
  • Completes safety checks to ensure that the vehicle is in good repair, safe and free of hazards.
  • Ensures that a working cellular phone or two way voice communication device is accessible on the van in case of emergency.
  • Observes speed limits and obeys regulatory signs and signals.
  • Completes trip reports or other documentation as requested.
  • Completes all training required by Easter Seals UCP and regulatory agencies within prescribed timeframes.
  • Ensures confidentiality of privileged information.
  • Follows all Easter Seals UCP policies and procedures as related to work.

In absence of Van Monitor or when assistance is needed:

  • Ensures that appropriate staff-child ratios are maintained during transportation.
  • Ensures that no child is ever left alone or unattended in the vehicle.
  • Assists passengers in boarding and exiting the vehicle.
  • Ensures all passengers are safely seated and restrained with an individual seat belt or appropriate child restraint device in compliance with NC Law when the vehicle is in motion.
  • Ensures the vehicle is clean at all times.
Position Requirements


  • High School Diploma or GED required from a USDOE or CHEA accredited institution
  • Must be at least 21 years old with a valid, unrestricted North Carolina Driver’s license or a duly licensed school bus driver, of the type required under NCMV law for the vehicle being driven.
  • Meets criteria as defined by ESUCP motor vehicle insurance carrier to be permitted to drive a company vehicle and/or transport supported individuals.
  • Minimum 3-year driving history.
  • Maintains current certification in First Aid and CPR
  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check

Skills and abilities

  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle while transporting a group of children.
  • Ability to supervise and interact effectively with young children.
  • Ability to accommodate the needs of children who have disabilities.
  • Working knowledge of road signs and the ability to observe driving regulations at all times.
  • Ability to take direction and follow through effectively.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing,
