The National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) is a not-for-profit, independent certification organization whose primary purposes are to establish and monitor a national certification system and to identify those counselors who have voluntarily sought and obtained board certification. The organizational mission is to advance counseling as the premier certification body of the profession with a vision of enhancing society worldwide through quality counseling. NBCC and Affiliates is comprised of three organizational affiliates: the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC), the Center for Credentialing & Education (CCE), and the NBCC Foundation (NBCCF).

NBCC and Affiliates has operations and partnerships in 40 countries providing certification, training programs, and public mental health services through institutes and residencies. Over 66,000 board certified counselors serve the public and advance mental health efforts across the globe. With a portfolio of nine credentials related to professional counseling, mental health, addictions, human services, and career development, NBCC and Affiliates seeks to expand the professional capacity of counselors and human service professionals. NBCC is focused specifically on credentialing, certification, and quality assurance, while CCE focuses on providing education and training opportunities and leveraging credentials to best serve communities. Additionally, CCE provides organizational management services for associations, boards, and other management clients. NBCCF engages in capacity building, seeking to expand access to mental health services in underserved and never-served communities and increase the accessibility of high-quality professional development resources for counselors.


The Legal Support Department is an important part of the NBCC Operations Division. The department works with all organizational affiliates and divisions as a shared service providing a range of legal support services related to contracts, government agency requirements, professional ethics, intellectual properties, and legal compliance issues.


The following duties and responsibilities are a summary of the essential functions of the job. Other duties might be performed, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below. Specific activities could change periodically.

  1. Assist with matters relating to intellectual property as assigned, including performing trademark searches using electronic research tools, gathering information for trademark applications and renewals and preparation of reports and correspondence.
  2. Assist in monitoring and maintaining NBCC and affiliates trademark and copyright portfolio.
  3. Assist in the preparation of I.P. docket inventories and reports.
  4. Assist in preparing application documents for filing with Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and Copyright Office.
  5. Draft and/or revise correspondence or communications relating to matters supporting NBCC and Affiliates departments.
  6. Assist in reviewing and preparing various corporate contracts, including services agreements and vendor contracts.
  7. Conduct legal research as requested.
  8. Complete special projects and other assignments as requested.
  9. Assist in reviewing and preparing State charitable solicitation registration filings.
  10. Assist in reviewing and preparing State business entity registrations.
  11. Analyze, review and make recommendations to organizational staff on proper trademark and copyright usage with regards to company correspondence and communications, organizational publications, and Internet webpages.
  12. Assist in reviewing and preparing cease and desist letters.
Position Requirements

  • 5 years’ experience in legal environment.
  • Experience with
    • Filings and e-filings
    • Domestic and foreign documents.
  • An Associate’s degree required; Bachelor’s degree in law or business, Paralegal certificate preferred.
  • Corporate legal / law firm experience is a plus, but not required.
  • Excellent organizational and communications skills with the ability to accomplish tasks within agreed upon timeframes through effective prioritization, with close attention to detail.
  • Strong computer skills, including advanced features of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint) database software, and ability to navigate government websites, as well as ability to use standard office equipment.
  • Strong written, verbal and interpersonal skills to professionally and effectively interact with various departments and/or vendors.
  • High level of interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations.
  • Ability to gather and summarize data for reports, find solutions to various administrative problems and prioritize work.
  • Must exhibit a high degree of initiative in managing multiple priorities simultaneously in a fast-paced, deadline-driven, detail-oriented work environment utilizing excellent judgment and decision-making skills.
  • Must be able to work independently.
