Job Summary: 

The Automation Engineer will provide automation field services to GSI and Koniag customers. The Automation Engineer will have a diverse background in automation, instrumentation and control with the ability to work under minimal supervision to design, develop and travel to destinations in Alaska to commission new control systems and to diagnose and repair issues with existing systems.  The nature of the work may be full-time, part-time, or temporary.  

Minimum of 5 years’ experience in the Essential Functions including, but not limited to:  (Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position.)

  • Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) configuration, validation, and troubleshooting
  • Human Machine Interface (HMI) software configuration, validation, and troubleshooting
  • Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) software programming, validation, and troubleshooting
  • Historian software configuration, validation, and troubleshooting
  • Control system commissioning and diagnostics
  • Interpret engineering documentation to develop control narratives and scopes of work
  • Instrumentation & control element commissioning and troubleshooting
  • Control Network troubleshooting and configuration
  • PID Loop tuning
  • PC Hardware, Virtualization and Operating Systems
  • Basic project management
  • Maintain company standards for quality
  • Exercise safe electrical and work habits
  • Other duties as assigned



Position Requirements

Knowledge, Skills & Ability: (Required unless specifically stated “preferred”)

  • Accredited Bachelor’s Degree in a Computer or Engineering related technical field. 
  • Knowledge of process control systems including but not limited to: water and wastewater, oil and gas, and energy systems.
  • PLC, DCS, SCADA and Historian programming experience.
  • Proficiency with Rockwell Automation programming software, FactoryTalk View, Studio 5000, RSLogix 500 preferred
  • Proficiency with Allen Bradley Controls hardware, PLC-5, SLC-500 series, Micrologix, CompactLogix, ControlLogix, Guardlogix preferred
  • Proficiency with GE Digital programming software iFIX, Proficy, Cimplicity preferred
  • Proficiency with GE/Emerson PLC hardware 90/30, Versamax, Genius, RX3i is preferred
  • Competency with Honeywell Experion is preferred
  • Competency with ABB Bailey, Advant, Symphony, Harmony is preferred
  • Competency with Emerson Ovation and DeltaV is preferred
  • Competency with Siemens S7, Simatic, Win-CC is preferred
  • Competency with Triconex and ICS Triplex preferred
  • Competency with Automation Direct PLC preferred
  • Competency with Bristol Babcock preferred
  • Competency with Modicon PLC hardware preferred
  • Competency with SCADA systems AVEVA Wonderware Intouch, ClearSCADA, Foxborough, Ignition preferred
  • Competency with Historian systems OSI PI, FactoryTalk, GE Proficy, Canary preferred
  • Competency with Alarm notification software, WIN-911, SCADAphone preferred
  • Competency with Reporting and Visualization software, FactoryTalk View, XLReporter, Dream Report preferred
  • Ability to read and understand Electrical Diagrams and P&IDs
  • Strong computer skills and mastery of Microsoft Office Suite or equivalent
  • Competency with computer programming languages, C++, Visual Basic preferred
  • Competency with relational database MS Access, SQL, Oracle preferred
  • Competency with AutoCAD Electrical is preferred
  • Strong oral and written communications skills and the ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the organization.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; must be able to work independently and interact effectively with all levels of the organization
  • Dependable attendance
  • Ability to operate computer keyboard and standard office equipment. 
  • Ability to sit and review information on a computer screen for long periods of time (up to 12 hours a day with lunch and breaks)
  • Must be able to withstand repetitive motion up to 12 hours a day with lunch and breaks
  • Subject to DOT Drug and Alcohol Testing
  • Must maintain a valid US Driver’s License
  • Ability to obtain a TWIC card and pass a federal background check for work in marine, air, or other transportation terminals
  • Ability to complete work at industrial worksites including rough and/or icy terrain
  • Ability to travel within Alaska to customer sites for work including remote locations


Office Location and Travel:

This position is based out of Anchorage, AK, although workers may travel to Alaska on rotational basis upon acceptance

Up to 50% travel may be required, sometimes to remote destinations

Working Environment & Conditions

This position is primarily indoors, consistent with a standard office position and has a noise level of mostly low to moderate.  Travel for this position may include remote destinations and/or primitive living conditions. Incumbent may be briefly exposed to ambient temperature ranges of negative (-)60F to positive (+)110F due to extremes of Alaska Environmental conditions.  Typical job duties may require the incumbent to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear.  The workload may require the incumbent to sit for extended periods of time.  The incumbent may occasionally be asked to lift and/or move up to 25 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.  


Travel Requirements Up to 50% travel may be required, sometimes to remote destinations.
