SUMMARY OF POSITION

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures will be the world’s premier institution dedicated to the art and science of movies. Located at Wilshire and Fairfax in Los Angeles, the Museum will be simultaneously immersive, experimental, educational, and entertaining. More than a museum, this dynamic film center will offer unparalleled experiences and insights into movies and moviemaking.

The Curator Exhibitions is responsible for the conceptualization and realization of a range of different scaled exhibitions and projects. This role also works in collaboration with filmmakers and artists, as well as advises and participates in interpretive initiatives.

JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Works collaboratively with the curatorial team in developing content for the museum, shares and discusses ideas and expertise, enhances the development of junior staff, and actively supports the department’s infrastructure.
  • Conducts research in film and cultural history related to potential exhibitions, publications, lectures, conferences, symposia, collection guides, and interpretive public programs.
  • Conceptualizes and organizes exhibitions of different scales ranging from major thematic or monographic exhibitions to more focused exhibitions as well as artist/filmmaker projects.
  • Develops checklists and moving images components, formulates the structure and design approach of exhibitions, secures loans, writes text for didactic materials, and scholarly catalogues or other types of publications as appropriate.
  • Participates in developing a project team, formulating the budget, developing tours, assessing conservation needs, resolving installation issues, initiating related outreach and interpretive programs.
  • Works closely with other Academy Museum staff members regarding programming, education, communication, collection management, and exhibition management.
  • Identifies objects for potential acquisition. The position recommends new acquisitions to collections curator and participates in acquisition meetings. Also participates in the de-accessioning process.
  • Initiates and maintains contacts with filmmakers, scholars, curators, critics, authors, and other colleagues in the field and culture in general.
  • Interfaces with Academy Members and Advisory groups.
  • Engages the public and disseminates knowledge on the Academy collection and programs and film history in general through exhibitions, publications, lectures, symposia, gallery talks, and other innovative public programs.
  • Works with Development staff to cultivate individuals, corporations, and foundations that may donate funds and/or goods and services in support of the museum’s exhibitions as required.
  • Represents the Museum in various settings from scholarly groups to PR events.

 
Position Requirements
  • MA in film studies, museum studies, or related field, PhD preferred
  • Minimum 5 years museum experience
  • Demonstrated experience conceptualizing, researching, planning, installing, and touring international loan exhibitions
  • Demonstrated experience working with living artists an/or filmmakers on projects and/or exhibitions
  • Expertise in film history and contemporary art related to moving image work
  • Demonstrated experience in public speaking and publishing
  • Experience in managing a team
  • Ability to multi-task in fast-paced, high volume work environment while maintaining high level of organization and attention to detail
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
