The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures will be the world’s premier institution dedicated to the art and science of movies. Located at Wilshire and Fairfax in Los Angeles, the Museum will be simultaneously immersive, experimental, educational, and entertaining. More than a museum, this dynamic film center will offer unparalleled experiences and insights into movies and moviemaking.

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures is seeking a talented Creative Director to provide vision and direction to all aspects of the Academy Museum brand. This includes graphic design, topography, photography, copy, illustrations, and other graphic treatments. The Creative Director must have the ability to embrace and communicate the brand across internal and external channels, defining and applying a unified brand look and feel across all touchpoints.

JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Frame and drive a creative vision for the Museum, and executing that vision across a variety of implementations (title walls, wayfinding, direct mail, marketing pieces, website/app, publications, signage, museum guides, retail pieces, educational collateral, presentation decks, case statements, invitations, annual reports, and more)
  • Develop and enforce brand principles and style guides to inform design and messaging across all touchpoints
  • Will partner with Director, Exhibition Design and Production and Director, Marketing and Communication on respective projects ensuring creative continuity
  • Manage and prioritize the wide variety of creative projects for the entire institution
  • Lead a team of creative writers, designers, and managers, ensuring that our design voice is consistent and strong across the institution
  • Evaluating the content of projects before completion
  • Collaborate with and/or manage/direct outside agencies and creative partners
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive project timelines for multiple ongoing projects that equally encourage creative exploration and production efficiency
  • Assist with copywriting for a variety of executions
  • Scout and share design innovations

 
Position Requirements
  • A BFA or BA in Graphic Design or a related field (a graduate degree in Graphic Design or a related field is preferred).
  • At least 10 year of experience in highly creative design roles, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
  • Experience building and nurturing creative teams that include a diverse range of roles.
  • Strong conceptual thinking skills, with the ability to simply and powerfully communicate ideas through writing and/or visuals.
  • Proven ability to work with senior leadership (C-level, board of trustees) to pitch ideas and build consensus.
  • Experience managing brand creative and operations teams including full time employees and a network of contract and freelance designers, producers, crew, talent, and other contributors.
  • Working knowledge of Mac OS, File Maker, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign and Adobe Illustrator a plus.
  • Knowledge of retouching and color, pre-press and all aspects of large format and small format digital printing as well as offset printing.
  • Experience working with a creative/design agency.
  • Experience communicating the value of creative problem-solving methods, design processes, and storytelling models to a wide range of audiences to encourage the best utilization of creative teams across all levels of project planning.
  • Impeccable written and verbal communications skills across all levels of engagement.
  • The ability to multitask, juggle multiple projects with varying timelines and work within a fast-paced environment.
