Student Assistant - Safety

Definition and Purpose

Under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Recreational Programs, the Student Assistant - Safety is responsible for assisting in implementation of safety and risk management training, documentation, research, and management. Additional duties may include instruction of safety courses for staff and patrons.

Educational Requirements and Qualifying Experience

  • Must be a currently enrolled student at Cal Poly with a minimum of 6 units. All ASI student staff must have a minimum GPA of 2.0. Graduate students must carry 4 units/3.0 GPA
  • Current certification in CPR/AED, First Aid, Title 22 First Aid, EMT certification, or safety instructor level certifications are preferred.
  • Previous safety response experience preferred.
  • Ability to be highly organized and have good planning skills.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations and those with special limitations or needs.
  • Ability to work well in a team atmosphere.
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to change.
  • Ability to perform detailed work with accuracy.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others or independently, as the situation requires.
  • Respond to and follow all appropriate emergency procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

General

  • Ensure a safe environment for all participants
  • Use a critical eye to identify risk management concerns
  • Provide quality customer service for all staff and customers
  • Awareness of and appreciation for individual uniqueness and diversity
  • Maintain prompt hours and follow absence procedures
  • Maintain a working relationship with staff and co-workers
  • Adhere to and enforce all ASI departmental policies and procedures

Administrative

  • Participate in and prepare minutes for all ASI Safety Committee meetings
  • Inventory and recognize when safety supplies or equipment need to be ordered and communicate the needs to supervisors
  • Revise and maintain appropriate documentation for global safety trainings, namely a master curriculum that will be reviewed annually
  • Create, implement, and maintain training matrix for ASI staff
  • Receive, code, and organize injury reports
  • Assist in certification management
  • Communicate updates, changes, and training information to whole organization

Training

  • Prepare incident and injury reports when appropriate
  • Maintain familiarity with evacuation plan for work area
  • Assist in implementation of regular trainings and meetings to maintain skills and increase preparedness
  • Be comfortable presenting to groups

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • The person holding this position is considered a "mandated reporter" under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in ASI policy as a condition of their employment.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Period of Employment

Employment with this organization is of an "at will" nature, which means that the employee may resign at any time and ASI may discharge the employee at any time with or without cause.

Compensation and Hours

Pay Rate: $12.00 per hour; maximum 20 hours per week.

Position Requirements

This position may require sitting, standing, walking, bending over, lifting or carrying up to 25 pounds, repetitive use of hands/arms, and eye/hand coordination.
