Mate aboard Schooner BRILLIANT 


Mystic Seaport Museum is accepting applications for a 1-year position (renewable for a second year) to start in fall 2020. BRILLIANT is a classic sailing yacht built in 1932.

Schooner BRILLIANT sails with adults on 1- to 5-day trips in the spring and fall, and with teens on 5- or 10-day trips during the summer. BRILLIANT participates in classic yacht racing, cruising, and educational programs. The crew consists of the captain and mate year round, and a cook during the sailing season, in addition to up to 12 students or passengers. During the off-season, the mate works with the captain and volunteers to perform all needed maintenance on the vessel, including annual haul out.

The mate will assist the captain in all aspects of the vessel’s operation ranging from teaching the student crew to maintenance of the vessel. Applicants should enjoy working with teenagers and adult participants. Due to the nature of the work involved, the incumbent interacts with a broad range of individuals including fellow staff, visitors, volunteers, trustees, vendors, etc. In all of these interactions, the reputation of Mystic Seaport Museum and the Watercraft Area are at stake. It is essential therefore that a high degree of professionalism be exhibited at all times.

Position Requirements

USCG 50 ton near coastal mate license with sailing endorsement is required. Preference is given to applicants with medical training, and racing experience. Ongoing clean drug test results are required.

Morgan, America's oldest commercial ship still in existence.
