About the Organization The Museum of Life and Science is one of North Carolina's top family destinations, located less than five miles from downtown Durham. Situated on 84-acres, our interactive science park includes a two-story science center, one of the largest butterfly conservatories on the East Coast and beautifully landscaped outdoor exhibits which are safe havens for rescued black bears, lemurs, and endangered red wolves. Other popular attractions include over 60 species of live animals, Dinosaur Trail, Ellerbe Creek Railway, and Hideaway Woods. Our mission is to create a place of lifelong learning where people, from young child to senior citizen, embrace science as a way of knowing about themselves, their community, and their world.

Description

This position supports the Museum's mission by developing and implementing informal education experiences and supporting the strategic objectives of the Innovation and Learning Experiences (I&L) team. This is a seasonal 3 month position starting Febuary 25th.The schedule will be Tuesday-Friday, requiring 15-20 hours of work a week. This position will be primarily daytime hours, with some occational weekend and evening work.

  • Delivery of facilitated experiences and programs for visitors, including:
  • Paid programs for children, families, adults and groups (camps, school programs, family events, etc.)
  • Informal, on-the-floor programs for visitors
  • Off-site programs
  • Special programs as they arise
  • Management of program materials
  • Work on cross-departmental teams as needed
  • Support general Museum activities
  • Some evening and weekend work required
  • Other duties as needed
 
Position Requirements

Requirments:

  • High School Diploma
  • Passion for informal education, particularly related to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), computational thinking, and/or design thinking
  • Experience implementing hands-on, informal programs to children, families and/or adults
  • Willingness to work with and handle invertebrate animals
  • Ability to engage with children and adults in a friendly, outgoing and professional manner
  • Ability to work independently and within a team
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Creativity, dependability, flexibility and enthusiasm
  • Must be able to travel distances of up to one mile over varying terrains and lift up to 25lbs

Desired:

  • College or technical education in a related subject
  • Experience working in a museum or other informal educational setting
  • Fluency in language other than English (with particular interest in Spanish)
  • Experience using technology to augment and enhance curriculum
  • Valid driver’s license
