JOB SUMMARY: The Cancer Center nurse administers nursing care to patients and/or plans, directs and coordinates the nursing care of patients via the nursing process and in collaboration with the health care team. The RN also instructs patients and families in procedures, health care practices and continuing care after discharge. The RN performs job duties and responsibilities in a manner adhering to the hospital and department's policies and procedures and in accordance with protocols developed collaboratively with the Medical Director of the Cancer Center. The RN may be assigned other responsibilities for the area.

  • Able to work effectively in a protocol driven setting 9. Exceptional assessment skills for the cancer population.
  • Skilled at inserting and maintaining IV's; skilled working with central lines and other venous access routes.
  • Able to initiate and maintain strong interpersonal/psychosocial relationships with this specific patient population.
  • Skillfully and accurately triages cancer patient phone calls.

EXPECTED BEHAVIORS:

  • Bases care on the nursing process.
    • Demonstrates thorough, accurate and timely assessments while exhibiting necessary response to changes in the patient's condition.
    • Provides and documents care per hospital and department policies and procedures.
    • Demonstrates competence in clinical and technical skills.
    • Provides instructions to patient/families regarding cancer care, therapies and procedures as well as survivorship care.
  • Seeks educational opportunities to improve knowledge/skill.
  • Participates in identifying or recommending areas for improvement.
  • Completes work in an efficient, timely manner that is conducive to team work and cost containment.
  • Communicates in a clear, concise and professional manner.
  • Performs nursing care following safety principles, OSHA guidelines and infection control guidelines.
  • Provides patient care following the Patient's First Commitment. 8. Highly effective in working within a care team.
 
Position Requirements

CERTIFICATION/LICENSE: Registered Nurse (RN)

ADDITIONAL LICENSURE/CREDENTIAL REQUIREMENTS: RN, OCN certified or certified within 18 months of date of hire. ONS Biotherapy & Chemotherapy Certified within 30 days of hire.

ADDITIONAL EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Three to five years nursing experience with some oncology experience preferred. Mandatory Annual Education: Confidentiality and HIPAA Corporate Compliance Fall Prevention PPD Campaign Quality Assessment Performance Improvement Safety & Security.
