Retail Operations Associate Lead

About the Organization The Museum of Life and Science is one of North Carolina's top family destinations, located less than five miles from downtown Durham. Situated on 84-acres, our interactive science park includes a two-story science center, one of the largest butterfly conservatories on the East Coast and beautifully landscaped outdoor exhibits which are safe havens for rescued black bears, lemurs, and endangered red wolves. Other popular attractions include over 60 species of live animals, Dinosaur Trail, Ellerbe Creek Railway, and Hideaway Woods. This position supports the Museum's mission by providing excellent customer service to enhance the customers' retail experience and maintaining strong operational protocol to protect the Museum's assets.

  • Opens and closes the museum stores in accordance with department standards
  • Serves as floor supervisor on a rotating basis
  • Motivates team through positive reinforcement of service standards
  • Monitors traffic flow and adjusts staffing to maintain appropriate levels during peak periods
  • Maintains visual merchandising standards with great attention to detail
  • Delegates and supervises tasks while maintaining a superior level of customer service
  • Monitors inventory levels on both the sales floor and in inventory storage
  • Effectively communicates operational successes, opportunities and concerns to the Retail Operations Manager
  • Knows and ensures that Museum policies and procedures are followed at all times
  • Additional duties as needed
Position Requirements


  • A demonstrated passion for customer service
  • Excellent conflict prevention and resolution skills
  • A demonstrated ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks efficiently and in an organized fashion
  • Ability to organize and monitor inventory
  • Excellent delegation and follow-up
  • Ability to develop and train others
  • General business comprehension
  • Basic knowledge of computer systems
  • Ability to accurately handle cash, charge, check, and gift card transactions as well as deposits
  • Ability to stand for up to 9 hours
  • Ability to maneuver around sales floor and stock room including repetitive bending, prolonged standing, twisting, and climbing
  • Ability to lift 40 pounds
  • Flexible schedule with weekend and potential evening work


  • Sales/retail supervisory experience
  • Visual merchandising experience
  • Conversant in Spanish
  • Familiarity with Counterpoint
