We currently have several opportunities for Substitute Teachers to join our team supporting the Wilmington Child Development Center. This position offers flexible days on an as-needed - on-call basis (M-F 8:30 am - 5:30 pm). If you’re looking for a rewarding position with a sustainable organization then come join our team!

The Substitute Teacher assists in the implementation of developmentally appropriate curriculum and maintaining compliance with Child Care Regulations. The substitute must ensure the development and safety of children in accordance with federal and state legislation and policies. The Substitute fulfills the job responsibilities of the individual for whom s/he is covering. In the event that all positions are covered, the Substitute may be assigned light office or organizational duties.

  • Assists teachers in planning, preparing and implementing daily activities for indoor and outdoor learning environments that encourage each child’s growth in social, emotional, cognitive, language and physical development.
  • Given direction from program staff and specialized therapists, the substitute teacher helps to successfully integrate specialized services in the curriculum.
  • Given direction from program staff and specialized therapists, the substitute teacher supports the learning of children with special needs by embedding specialized instruction/ therapy into the daily routine.
  • Provides personal care to children as needed, including toileting, feeding, hand washing and assisting children on and off the van.
  • Becomes familiar with the teacher’s written lesson plans, the daily schedule, methods for documentation, and all other daily duties of the teacher.
  • Ensures the safety of children at all times and across all learning environments.
  • Maintains cooperative relationships and clear, positive communication with staff, children, families, support professionals, volunteers, and caregivers.
  • Complies with current Division of Child Development and Early Education, Developmental Day, Health & Sanitation, and rated license regulations.
  • Works with other staff members to form a positive, supportive team atmosphere.
  • Ensures confidentiality of privileged information.
  • Completes documentation as directed by program staff.
  • Participates in professional development and in-service training as required by ESUCP and local/ state / federal regulatory and licensure agencies, completing required training within prescribed timeframes.
  • Participates in the maintenance of indoor and outdoor learning environments including equipment/ toys/ learning materials.
  • Maintains regular attendance and punctuality, manages the use of PTO time, and follows all policies and procedures regarding time off.
  • Follows all ESUCP Policies and Procedures.
  • Must demonstrate Easter Seals valued behaviors of Accountability, Commitment and Caring as appropriate to the position.
  • Performs other duties as requested by the teacher, director or other support staff.
Position Requirements


High School diploma or equivalent appropriately accredited by the appropriate state department of education.
NC Early Childhood Credential (NCECC) or equivalent preferred.

One (1) year experience working with children with special needs preferred.

  • Ability to supervise and interact effectively with many young children at one time.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective collaborative relationships with parents & staff.
  • Ability to demonstrate professional conduct and attitude in working with parents, staff, and community.
  • Ability to take direction and follow through effectively.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing,
  • Knowledge of child development and recommended practices in service provision for children who are typically developing and those with or at risk for developmental or behavioral/emotional disabilities.
  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check
