Description

Primary Purpose: Assist the Equine Manager in daily operations of the Houston SPCA Equine and Farm Animal program, ensuring that every animal and customer receives the highest quality care and service

Essential Functions of the Position:

  • Must be able to work in both the Houston and Hempstead locations as needed
  • Assist with overall daily operations, including equine intake, data collection, medical procedures, training assessments, transports, and adoption.
  • Feed and provide daily care for all animals in such manner as to ensure a low stress environment.
  • Observe animals for signs of illness or injury; administering medications or treatments to ill/ injured animals under direction from the veterinarian.
  • Work with horses daily in preparation for adoption.
  • Maintain assigned equipment, supplies, facilities, etc. in a safe and clean condition.
  • Clean and disinfect assigned areas according to prescribed protocols daily.
  • Transport animals within the shelter based on each animal's unique needs.
  • Advise potential adopters of Houston SPCA adoption benefits, policies and procedures.
  • Assist with farm maintenance as needed.
 
Position Requirements

Knowledge, skill and abilities needed to perform the essential functions of this position:

  • Provide information to the public about Houston SPCA programs and promoting good animal care and responsible pet ownership.
  • Protect all confidential information, including customers, donors, animals and internal communications.
  • High school diploma, or its equivalent
  • Minimum 18 years old
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience working with horses of unknown health and behavior preferred
  • Professional horse handling experience including socializing, halter training, as well as training and riding experience of young/ or unhandled horses preferred
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of breeds, diseases, equine health, medical needs and treatment
  • Experience with rescue horses as well as other farm animals is desirable
  • Ability to drive a truck/ trailer and to load, haul and handle horses for transport
  • Understand, promote and follow the mission of the Houston SPCA
  • Understand, comprehend and communicate the Houston SPCA adoption policies and procedures
  • Ability to display exceptional customer service and represent the Houston SPCA in a professional manner in all situations with the public, volunteers and staff
  • Ability to create and sustain positive working relationships within the Houston SPCA, with volunteers, the public and be a team player
  • Knowledge and ability to accurately work with detailed information in paper and electronic form
  • Ability to read, write and communicate effectively
  • Ability to learn and quickly adapt to changes in programs and procedures
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License and insurable under the Houston SPCA auto policy
  • Ability to work unscheduled hours
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs
