Purpose of Division:

The Public Relations division manages the corporation’s internal and external communications, including but not limited to regular online and print content, email newsletters, videos, corporate reports (such as the annual report) and social media messaging. The division also provides graphic design support to other business units throughout the corporation, provides overall content management, brand management and enforcement, and website development. This involves establishing and implementing corporate-wide policies, strategies and guidelines, and coordinating audience and strategies that guide the corporation’s communications activities. The Public Relations team also provides communications resources (speechwriting, talking points, media training) for corporate officers and thought leaders. In addition, the division coordinates the delivery of branding and communications best practices to NeighborWorks network organizations.

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Senior Vice President, the Senior Director, Public Relations (Operations) proactively assists the Senior Vice President in the development and implementation of the division’s goals and strategies, content direction, budgeting and staff operations to ensure the efficient and effective operation of the division. The Senior Director also assists the Senior Vice President in ensuring the quality and timeliness of the division’s communications products and in coordinating communications with other divisions. It is expected the Director, Public Relations (Operations) will stay current with trends and topics in affordable housing and community development, nonprofit marketing, innovations in corporate communications, and relevant technologies.

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Senior Vice President, the Senior Director, Public Relations (Operations) proactively assists the Senior Vice President in the development and implementation of the division’s goals and strategies, content direction, budgeting and staff operations to ensure the efficient and effective operation of the division. The Senior Director also assists the Senior Vice President in ensuring the quality and timeliness of the division’s communications products and in coordinating communications with other divisions. It is expected the Director, Public Relations (Operations) will stay current with trends and topics in affordable housing and community development, nonprofit marketing, innovations in corporate communications, and relevant technologies.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Overseeing the quality and timeliness of work products in coordination with the Director of Content.
  • Assisting the Senior Vice President with the strategic direction and vision of the division, including goal setting, budget planning/management, and systems implementation.
  • Developing the business processes, policies, standards and procedures for the corporation’s communications activities.
  • Ensuring that division staff work together efficiently and facilitate optimal coordination with other divisions on communication projects and tasks.
  • Spearhead major initiatives - providing project management guidance, best practices and oversight —to ensure the timely development and delivery of communications projects and deliverables.
  • Assisting the Senior Vice President with evaluating and managing requests and proposals for
    new communications products, including Content Management System, Customer Response Management systems, and Media Tools (cision, meltwater, etc.)
  • Leads and monitors the work of department to ensure efficiencies, gather metrics and report outcomes. Compiling and writing weekly, monthly and quarterly reports for officers and senior leadership as assigned; gathering and reporting on metrics, project deliverables and deadlines; analyzing outcomes and providing key data for evaluation (viewership, visitors, fans/followers, audience size, interactivity, etc.).
  • Managing all aspects of personnel management for direct reports, including but not limited to: work plan development, performance evaluations, and time and attendance. Supervising assigned staff according to overall company policy, including: developing staff to maximize potential, monitoring and assisting staff with work progress, and monitoring performance to achieve goals and objectives.
  • Other job-related duties as assigned.

Nature of Work Contacts:
NeighborWorks America staff, network member organizations, vendors and national partners for the purpose of supporting public relations efforts. Some contact with media representatives and communications executives with leading housing sector organizations. Senior management levels within corporations, foundations, financial institutions, federal agencies, trade associations and national nonprofit organizations for the purpose of exchanging information. Executive levels of NeighborWorks® organizations to respond to inquiries.


Fiscal Responsibilities:
Assisting SVP with budgetary oversight (particularly for special projects), budgetary planning/forecasting, and resource allocation approval up to preapproved limits.

 
Position Requirements

Required Minimum Qualifications:
(a) Education:
A bachelor’s degree with a focus on communications, journalism, writing or a related field is required.

(b) Experience: At least 12 years’ experience with a communications/public relations shop for a nonprofit or medium to large corporation. Journalism and writing experience are key, as is familiarity with maintaining and adhering to an organization’s stylebook (AP, Chicago, etc.). Must have at least 5-7 years of supervisory experience in a communications setting.

(c) Licenses, Certifications: None required.

(d) Competencies, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: A strong knowledge and understanding of the use of communications (internal and external) in a larger setting. Must be able to manager multiple and overlapping projects and deadlines. Must be familiar with metrics and analytics. Highly effective writing and editing skills in various forms (e.g., corporate documents, online corporate presence, white papers, reports, speeches, talking points, articles). A grasp of basic design principles. Extensive and exceptional ability to plan, organize, and carry out complex projects. Marketing experience is a plus.

(f) Technology: Microsoft office suite, Adobe creative tools, Salesforce, media tracking, database management software, content management systems.

Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree with a focus on communications, journalism or writing. Experience or knowledge of affordable housing/community revitalization issues is preferred but not required.

Working Conditions:
(a) Travel:
up to 25%.
(b) Physical/Sensory Demands: Fast paced working environment, extensive computer usage. Light lifting up to 25 lbs.

Special Provisions:
Occasional work outside of normal business hours, such as weekends and evenings may be required.
