Description

Founded in 1898, today Alter - a privately owned, fourth Generation Company - is one of the largest scrap processors in the country, with trading offices and processing plants across the central United States. Alter Trading provides a direct supply of quality products, sourced both in America and abroad, to consumers in the United States and throughout the world. Alter operates 59 facilities, primarily in the upper Midwest as well as some facilities in the Southern United States.

Summary

Alter Trading's Management Trainee Program allows future facility leaders to be exposed to all facets of the metals recycling business during a 12 month training program. Under the direction of an experienced Alter Facility Manager and Regional Director of Operations, Trainees will gain the knowledge and leadership skills necessary to become a Facility Manager at a small 5-15 employee facility or potentially an Assistant Facility/Operations Manager a larger operation.

Facility Managers at Alter Trading independently oversee all operations at their assigned facility as entrepreneurial business leaders. They are responsible for the management of facility personnel including hiring, training and discipline. Ownership of the P&L requires maintaining new and existing supplier relationships as well as careful control of cost and expenditures. All of this is done while maintaining Alter's high safety and environmental standards. Facility Managers may also on occasion operate yard equipment and perform light equipment maintenance.

The Management Trainee will be responsible for several areas of training including, but not limited to:

  • Scrap Metal Knowledge
    • Transportation: Trainees will learn how to schedule and organize the pick-up of incoming loads, order trucks or rail cars and/or schedule contract carriers.
    • Products and Commodity Training: Trainees will learn the dozens of products and commodities recycled by Alter by working with employees and the facility manager to perform day-to-day tasks.
    • Equipment Operations and Management: Training will be provided on operations and maintenance of heavy mobile equipment - hydraulic cranes, forklifts, and skid steers. Maintaining preventative maintenance checklists will be required and trainees will be taught how to organize major repairs on equipment as required.
    • Material Processing: Trainees will learn how to process material and how these materials are prepared for shipment to the customer.
  • Safety and Environmental Knowledge
    • Demonstrate the ability to ensure a culture of safety and environmental stewardship.
    • Gain a thorough understanding of safety and environmental procedures and requirements.
  • Finance and Human Resources
    • Interpreting gross margin analyses and facility Profit/Loss reporting.
    • Employee relations training, HR policies and procedures including interviewing, hiring, and performance management of employees.
  • Marketing and Sales
    • Interacting with existing suppliers and consumers, and building relationships and developing new business will be required.
    • Monitor the quality of incoming material and monitor the processing and packaging of outgoing material to ensure customer specifications are met.
    • Trainees will be taught the mathematics of buying and selling metals and how to negotiate contracts with our business partners.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Associates or Applied Science degree or equivalent working experience in an applicable technical, engineering or operations management field required. Bachelor's degree a plus.
  • Willingness to relocate to Alter facilities across the Midwest including Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. Future advancement opportunities may require relocation.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Able to deal effectively and interface with employees at all levels within the organization and must be capable of effectively communicating with external customers, peers, and representatives from outside the organization in a clear and professional manner.
  • Strong organizational and time-management abilities. Must be able to work in a flexible and fluid environment with competing priorities.
  • Successful candidates will exhibit a willingness and curiosity to learn and be excited to work in the recycling industry, in an outdoor, heavy manufacturing industrial environment.
  • Computer knowledge and proficiency required
  • Strong business math skills required
  • Valid State driver's license required
  • Mechanical aptitude and interest required
  • Prior experience managing/supervising or leading employees or groups a plus
