GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION:

Responsible for various administrative functions as assigned by the Associate General Minister, including day to day operational management of Wider Church Ministries. This position will be part of WCM's leadership team that drives the ministries overall strategy. With a program team of dedicated professionals, the Executive Associate will be responsible for program leadership, planning and delivery; knowledge management and relationship building both inside and outside the United Church of Christ National Offices.

Enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the Associate General Minister's Office. The success of this role demands a strong office presence. Must have the ability to innovate, think strategically and conceptually, listen carefully, multi-task, give attention to details and organization, and communicate efficiently. The position requires an extremely high level of professionalism sound and mature judgment, and collegiality. Must have the proven ability to advise senior leaders effectively, proven success in developing collaborative relationships across diverse constituencies as well as excellent verbal and written communication skills.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Personifies an executive presence and the ability to inspire confidence to all levels of the organization and with all constituencies.
  • Works closely with the Associate General Minister (AGM) in promoting the overall strategy and mission; serves as operational assistant to the Associate General Minister authorized to carry out management/administrative responsibilities, including day-to-day management for all teams and program areas.
  • Embodies the core values of the UCC at all times and promotes a positive culture for the workplace.
  • Works with the AGM to oversee all aspects of program strategy, planning, and delivery including programmatic strategies established for the Common Global Ministries Board
  • Directs communications for the AGM including routine emails, speaking requests, and requests for information. Work with AGM and Executive Assistant to ensure effective and efficient systems, processes, and checklists to manage the volume of communications coming into the AGM's Office. Handle press relations for the AGM.
  • Works in a coordinated manner with the Executive Assistant on scheduling, meeting and event planning, travel plans, projects and other routine day-to-day activities.
  • Develops initial draft responses to correspondence as needed
  • Develops initial draft issue statements
  • Ensures the AGM has support materials for all meetings
  • Coordinates and oversees special projects and special events
  • Establishes and maintains contacts with a wide variety of individuals and groups who are in a position to compel/promote the WCM's story, mission and goals
  • Provides leadership, guidance and innovation to ensure quality, integrity, and continuous improvement of organizational programs and project management
  • Provides leadership in the development of team communication and cohesiveness; coordinating Leadership Team meetings and staff meetings.
  • Works with AGM to ensure that WCM programs and processes are cutting-edge, adapting to new realities, incorporating new approaches, and expanding partnerships, alliances and audiences
  • Responsible for assisting with budget management; defining financial needs and maintaining budget parameters
  • Participates in annual processes such as performance reviews and goal setting of direct reports
  • Develops innovative initiatives to enhance efficiency and effectiveness throughout the office
  • Develops and enhances the systems needed to gather internal and external performance information and utilizes it to assess, improve, and demonstrate organizational impact
  • Serves as a member of the Ministry Advisory Council
  • Serves as a member of the Mission Planning Council
  • Contributes to the effectiveness of work teams by fostering a spirit of cooperation and accomplishing assigned tasks.
  • Develops and maintains professional and courteous relationships with staff, partners and other constituents; serve as a positive role model by exemplifying values which are consistent with the United Church of Christ.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.
 
Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required to perform successfully in this position.

  • A bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience, or a combination of academic study and experience; advance degree preferred, plus 8-10 years’ experience leading in a complex non-profit religious organization.
  • Desire and sensitivity to work in diverse racial, ethnic, cultural and religious settings with commitment to pluralism in the workplace as well as in one’s understanding of mission.
  • Thorough understanding of the history, polity, and structures of the United Church of Christ.
  • Commitment to and theological understanding of mission in its broad range of concerns; ability to articulate and witness to one's faith perspective.
  • Considerable people management skills; capable of acting as leader, advisor, mentor, and coach
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and collegially as well as independently.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise, delegate, and utilize the support of administrative support staff professionals
  • Demonstrated excellent written and oral English language skills, including ability to conceptualize and develop print and media resources; public speaking skills.
  • Exceptional analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Significant relationship building experience
  • Responsiveness to change and leads as a change agent
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Problem-solving skills and able to create strategies to achieve defined goals
  • Time management skills and ability to multi-task in an environment of frequent interruptions

  • Ability to use technology to enhance work; proficiency with Office 365 (Excel, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint applications) as well as other presentation tools and video conference platforms
  • Ability to travel within the US on an as needed basis
