School Social Worker

Reports to: Head of School

Position Summary:

To help students grow socially, emotionally, and academically via community connections and supports depending on student needs in and out of the school setting.

Job Function and Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate skill and knowledge in the area of school social work

  • Assist student support teams and committees on education

  • Reassess student records to determine past impediments and/or interventions

  • Evaluate information obtained from record reviews and inquiries to ascertain environmental effects and befitting resource needs

  • Merge information gained into a verbal presentation and/or written report

  • Conduct interview involving students and parents to deliberate on issues pertaining to non-attendance and establish a course of action

  • Support the school in adhering to school board regulations on truancy and absenteeism

  • Regular attendance of student support team meetings and court sessions when necessary

  • Suggest and connect families with appropriate social services

  • Utilize community resources in addressing the needs of students

  • Demonstrate understanding of the Social Emotional Learning Standards (SEL) and effective instructional strategies as well as develop and present SEL topics to students and parents/guardians in collaboration with the school counselor.

  • Develop and implement a continuum of services to best meet student and family needs.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of school and community resources available to assist students and families

  • Conduct home visits as needed with families

  • Use knowledge and understanding of the reciprocal influences of home, school, and community to intervene and alleviate barriers to student achievement

  • Advocate proactively and establishes respectful and beneficial partnerships with students, families, and community stakeholders

  • Serve as connection between the school and families to foster positive cooperative processes in educational planning for students by ensuring engagement of parent/guardian in school activities

  • Administer psycho-educational social skill groups, classroom presentations, and meetings on recognized aspects of concern for the students in collaboration with the school counselor

  • Complete functional behavior evaluation reports on identified students in collaboration with the school counselor

  • Build effective school-community teams

  • Demonstrate active leadership in prompting positive engagement of parent/guardians in the educational process

  • Continually assess and take a leadership role in communicating solutions to such issues as attendance, diversity, mental health, suicide, prevention/awareness, behavior management, delinquency, crisis intervention, homelessness, child abuse, neglect, and the importance of confidentiality with staff to best meet the needs of students

  • Support the growth of every student in the building

  • Work diligently with all stakeholders to facilitate student success.

  • Assist with personalized services for students

  • Provide information and resource services for students, parents/guardians, and faculty

  • Maintain comprehensive records and reports

  • Comply with local, state, and federal guidelines and policies, regulations, and laws affecting area of responsibility

  • Develop personal, professional growth plan and demonstrate professional ethics and leadership

  • Manage crises with confidence and competence

  • Maintain confidentiality of student information

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a Masters of Social Work (MSW) from a school accredited through the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE)

  • Credentialed as a Licensed Master Social Worker or Licensed Clinical Social Worker

  • Minimum of two years field experience preferred
