The focal species of the SD-CWMA is buffelgrass, an African grass that poses an existential threat to the ecological integrity of the Sonoran Desert. The GIS Analyst will assist our efforts to control this invasive species by developing solutions to the challenges of mapping buffelgrass throughout its invaded range in southern Arizona. This will include performing geospatial analysis, GIS needs analysis, developing desktop and web based GIS solutions, creating cartographic map products and participating on or leading GIS projects in collaboration with academic and government agency scientists.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Assists in the development of a map of buffelgrass distribution in the Santa Catalina and Rincon Mountains through new methodologies
  • Performs geospatial data building, modeling and analysis using advanced spatial data manipulation or cartographic procedures
  • Designs and prepare cartographic representations of GIS data using GIS applications, including web based mapping systems
  • Participates in developing and implementing quality control procedures for GIS processes, procedures, services and products
  • Evaluate and make recommendations on the development of a Pima County GIS database to house and serve buffelgrass data derived from multiple source databases (e.g., agency and volunteer databases) and ensure interoperability with open source GIS software and open data access (e.g., through OGC-compliant web services
  • Coordinate with Pima County on GIS database federation
  • Provide technical support regarding the maintenance, development, or operation of GIS databases, applications and data collection devices as they relate to buffelgrass and other invasive species
  • Provide guidance on new programs to engage stakeholders and community members in an integrated invasive species mapping program
