Horse Racing Specialist 


Position Objective:

To use professional expertise and experience, particularly with equines, to support and help develop PETA's horse racing campaign

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

• Monitor horse racing issues
• Daily monitoring of horse racing news, horse racing websites, horse racing blogs and blog comments, social media, and horse racing media for breaking events
• Field observer and field practice when necessary
• Draft complaints to law enforcement
• Liaise with law enforcement and horse racing officials
• Attend conferences and racing events in the U.S. and internationally, as needed
• When possible, assist with horse rescues and relocation missions, such as arranging transportation and vet examinations
• Develop and maintain relationships with other equine experts, sanctuaries, and government agencies in order to obtain assistance with specific cases and legislation
• Liaise with PETA's social marketing team
• Arrange meetings for PETA racing experts and racing officials
• Take whistleblower reports
• Research best practices in horse racing
• Maintain confidentiality at all times
• Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor

Position Requirements

• Working knowledge of horse racing, horse physiology, horse care, and horse veterinary care
• Familiarity with horse racing, horse physiology, horse care, or horse veterinary care
• Direct experience with horses is preferred
• Ability to handle cruelty complaint calls in a professional and confidential manner
• Demonstrated excellent proofreading and organizational skills
• Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills, tact, and diplomacy as well as the ability to communicate effectively
• Proven exceptional writing and research skills
• Proven ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize work
• Professional appearance and demonstrated exceptional public-speaking skills
• Extensive working knowledge of Microsoft Office software
• Ability and willingness to travel on occasion, domestic and internationally
• Must be at least 21 years of age and have a valid U.S. driver’s license, a minimum of three years of driving experience, and a satisfactory driving record
• Support for PETA’s philosophy and the ability to advocate PETA’s positions on issues professionally
• Commitment to the objectives of the organization
