PURPOSE:

The Electrical Controls Engineer is primarily responsible for designing/maintaining all electrical and instrumentation systems with limited interruption to the plant's production requirements. This position covers all electrical control and instrumentation systems and associated equipment including substations, PLC systems and plant control network. This position is also responsible for setting a high standard for safety, quality, housekeeping, productivity and performance for all plant associates.

Responsibilities include:

  • Optimize and maintain plant PLC systems and plant control instruments.
  • Optimizing and maintaining the servers, software and hardware of the Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC).
  • Optimizing and maintaining the plant control networks, ensuring proper utilization and reliability.
  • Optimizing and maintaining the Human Machine Interface (HMI) working closely with Production, perfecting trends, reporting, control, alarms, and displays.
  • Facilitating improvements through the implementation of new technology and methods.
  • Working closely with operators and Supervisors to make control system changes that meet their needs and improve Plant operations. Provide daily support on PLC & HMI related issues, VFD's, tuning of PIDs, etc.
  • Assist with process engineering studies and routine work. Be capable of performing small studies independently and assist in more major work.
  • Managing the entire scope of a project from inception to completion of the field commissioning.
  • Performing diagnostics and troubleshooting of field devices, training, and development of maintenance associates.
  • Provide on-the-spot guidance and formal training as required.
  • Carry out and / or oversee the development and implementation of all electrical / instrumentation type modifications as a result of corrective actions or as may be requested by other departments.
  • Control the use and coordinate the work of outside contractors ensuring that proper insurance certification is on file before any work begins.
  • Ensure conformance with Automation, IT and corporation guidelines.
  • Successfully implement assigned capital projects in a timely manner and within budget constraints.
  • Promote new upgrades and features to improve and assist plant performance.
  • Maintain inventory levels of spare parts for process control equipment.
  • Remain up-to-date on new technologies and techniques in this field.
  • Responsible for safety compliance.
  • Minimal travel required but must be available to be part of an on-call schedule for weekends and off-hours and provide remote assistance as needed.
 
Position Requirements

TECHNICAL SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering and 3+ years of Automation or Controls related experience. Experience as a Controls Systems Integrator is an asset.
  • Technical expertise of various DCS, PLC (Allen Bradley RSLogix 5000 preferred), HMI/SCADA (I-Fix) and other applicable systems. Experience with PLC programming is a desirable.
  • Understanding and experience with all components involved in process architecture from end devices to control room servers.
  • Knowledge and experience with various control systems architecture (ControlNet, DeviceNet, EtherNet, Modbus, etc).
  • Knowledge and experience with maintaining and troubleshooting electrical field devices (Variable Frequency Drives, Servo Drives, Motors, etc) is strongly preferred
  • Knowledge and experience with various analog sensors and transmitters (pressure, temperature, load cells).
  • Knowledge of FANUC Robots is an asset.
  • Knowledge and experience with power distribution systems.
  • Proficient at reading and interpreting technical documentation (schematics, loop sheets, manuals, technical bulletins etc.).
  • Proficient with MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and AutoCad.
