This is your opportunity to join Woodland Park Zoo as the Director of Facilities! This is a full-time, regular, and benefited position. SUMMARY Responsible for the planning, development, and management of the zoo’s physical location including the maintenance of horticulture, grounds, facilities, and exhibits. Provides leadership, technical knowledge, and business insight to direct the maintenance of the facility. This position has direct responsibility for the day to day operations and maintenance of all building systems. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES - Review analyses of activities, costs, operations, and forecast data to determine progress toward slated goals and objectives.
- Direct the development and implementation of departmental policies and procedures in support of strategic objectives and initiatives.
- Develop departmental goals and objectives, departmental budgetary and staffing plan for the Maintenance, Horticulture, Exhibits, and Facility Management departments.
- Provide long-range planning of facilities services and projects for the zoo.
- Facilitate complex coordination between departments within constraints that include public hours, animal needs, labor and material availability, budgetary, scheduling, and contractor needs.
- Participate in formulating and administering zoo policies as well as Safety, Contingency and Emergency Management plans.
- Ensure compliance with WISHA, OSHA, Uniform Building Code, and ADA.
- Develop and administer construction and maintenance contracts for the fabrication, installation, and ongoing maintenance of the facility and exhibits in collaboration with the Director, Capital Projects.
- Ability to address a wide variety of personnel matters, workload management, recruitment, hiring, training, promotion and recognition, and termination of professional and represented staff.
- Knowledge of contract negotiations with labor unions, ability to advise on issues pertaining to negotiations with labor union representatives.
- Ensure that regular on-going communication takes place throughout the facilities department. Communicate daily operations activities, set expectations, and create awareness of objectives.
- Participate in the Senior Leadership Team.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS - Master’s degree or MBA from an accredited college or university in Facility Operations, Engineering, Architecture, or a related field; ten (10) or more years’ experience managing a large staff and facility, including strategic planning, budget, and projects; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Valid Washington State Driver’s License.
- Ability to read and interpret architectural and engineering drawings and specifications, construction documents, civil documents, permit applications, and vendor contracts.
- Knowledge of surveying, AutoCAD, Project Manager or similar construction related software systems.
- Ability to read, write, and speak publically at a high level, articulate complex concepts, and give professional advice.
- Proven ability to maintain strategic relationships with off-facility jurisdictional bodies, including City, Fire Department, Parks, Department of Labor & Industries, property insurance groups, and labor unions.
- Working knowledge of building construction trades including electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and pool operation.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Windows and data processing programs.
PREFERRED SKILLS - Working knowledge of Word, Excel, and Access.
- Familiarity with AutoCAD.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS - This position must frequently lift or move up to 30 pounds and occasionally lift and or move up to 50 pounds.

The noise level in the work environment is occasionally loud.
