JOB TITLE: Vice President of Membership and Development

POSITION SUMMARY: Responsible for association’s overall membership, dues structure, marketing and business development. Spearheads membership retention and recruitment efforts under approved membership development plan. Works collaboratively with the teams across the organization and supports efforts to increase non-dues revenue. Oversees micro volunteering, committees and governance functions. This is a highly visible position working closely with senior-level executives within member hospitals and is a key member of the association’s leadership team.

REPORTS TO: President and CEO

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Conceptualize, execute, and measure the success of membership recruitment and retention initiatives. Oversee marketing and promotional campaigns related to America’s Essential Hospitals membership development, events, distance learning, educational programs, and scholarships. Includes oversight and management of strategic marketing plans that utilize email marketing, direct mail, personal outreach, and social media. Oversee the efforts of a team responsible for membership, marketing, and business development; coordinate at the strategic and tactical levels with other association departments; and manage consultants and vendors. Work collaboratively with the institute director to ensure that the value-added proposition of the institute’s projects is incorporated and communicated as an association membership benefit.

Membership:

  • Grow and retain health system membership using creative strategies to reinforce the association’s unique value proposition. Meet or exceed annual membership projections. Continually identify and assess compelling new member benefits, features, and products. Lead efforts to identify, engage, and retain at-risk members. Oversee new member onboarding.
  • Track, analyze, and improve member engagement in partnership with fellow executives. Communicate and collaborate with association staff to keep engagement opportunities infused through work, events, and partnerships.
  • Collaborate with other senior association leaders to guide the association in executing its strategic plan.
  • Track member experience through member conversations, ad-hoc surveys, and periodic member satisfaction surveys. Take the “pulse” of our members.
  • Ensure membership inquiries and correspondence are handled in a timely, proactive, and effective manner.

Marketing:

  • Develop targeted member marketing campaigns to increase member engagement.
  • Create marketing campaigns and promotions to drive prospective new member recruitment.

Corporate Relations:

  • Build, grow, and retain corporate relations to meet or exceed annual revenue projections and position America’s Essential Hospitals as a strategic partner for companies that provide goods or services to essential hospitals.
  • Continually identify and assess new member benefits, products, and services that add value to corporate relations.

Strategic Partnerships and New Business Development:

  • Oversee business development staff and processes, working with colleagues to identify, evaluate, and develop new product opportunities and improvements to existing products designed to yield important member benefits.
  • Create strategic business development plan to align with long-term association needs and goals.
  • Working with the director of marketing and business development, oversee the assignment of product management teams to launch and manage new products or services.
  • Oversee and manage the association’s strategic partnerships.
  • Seek other potential long-term strategic partnerships.
  • Perform other activities as assigned by the president and CEO.

Governance and Committee/Volunteer Management:

  • Oversee the member micro volunteering program, working with association colleagues to promote attractive micro volunteering opportunities across the organization.
  • With the president and CEO, serve as staff lead for the association’s membership and strategic planning committees, each comprising senior-level executives within member hospitals.
  • Oversee governance function for America’s Essential Hospitals and Essential Hospitals Institute, including all board and committee appointments, board and committee meetings, and conflict of interest and other board policies.
  • Work with colleagues to regularly identify and cultivate a diverse pipeline of volunteers interested in engaging in association policy and decision-making.

Financial:

  • Develop budgets and monitor actual results compared with budgets on an ongoing basis.
  • Develop three-to-five-year financial projections for membership dues revenue.
  • Annually, review association dues structure and recommend changes, as appropriate.

Association Management Software and Website:

  • Partner with the director of information technology (IT) and manager of data analytics to maximize the use of iMIS association management software (AMS) across the organization, providing actionable membership information. Working with colleagues, establish business and operational policies related to iMIS.
  • Collaborate with the IT department and the communications team on website strategy, functionality, messaging, and content development designed to engage members through vibrant marketing, valuable events, and strong corporate relations, with a focus on user experience.

Position Requirements

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree required, preferably in business, marketing, or related field
  • Minimum 10 years’ work experience; five years’ association experience preferred
  • Experience with iMIS or other AMS
  • Strong background in member services
  • Strong background in business development including developing, budgeting, launching, enhancing and operationalizing non-profit products and services.
  • Proven success developing marketing, messaging and promotional campaigns that produce quantifiable outcomes
  • Quantifiable and proven success generating non-dues revenue through corporate membership and/or sponsorship and other new business line activities

LICENSURE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Certified Association Executive (CAE) preferred; MBA helpful

TRAVEL:

  • Moderate travel required (2-3 times per month)
