Description

Job Summary: Seeking a highly motivated and technology savvy individual to serve as a Youth Services Library Assistant for the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh-Knoxville. The Youth Services Library Assistant acts as a mentor and connects children and teens to resources and opportunities that reflect their interests, respond to their needs within diverse and changing communities, and empower them to be builders of their own future.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Working in conjunction with the Children’s Librarian and Teen Library Assistant to execute the vision of Children’s and Teen Services through outreach, in-house programming and engagement in volunteer opportunities;
  • Supporting location-based and system-wide partnerships and outreach efforts;
  • Developing rapport with youth (ages 0-18) and helping to fulfill their informational and recreational needs;
  • Participating in system-wide initiatives and programs;
  • Assisting customers of all ages in performing reference searches, selecting and locating materials, and meeting digital literacy goals;
  • Managing the Teenspace and Children’s area, including space upkeep and inventory, creating engaging displays;
  • Assisting with day-to-day operations of the branch, including circulation, registration, and shelving.
 
Position Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree;
  • Exceptional verbal and written skills;
  • Experience working with children and teens in urban and informal settings;
  • Ability to work as part of a team; manage assignments and responsibilities effectively in a busy urban environment;
  • Experience creating and implementing programming for youth (0-18) is strongly desired;
  • Must be able to work flexible hours and shifts in accordance with the library hours of operation;
  • Bilingual or multilingual abilities a plus;
  • PA Criminal Record Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance, FBI Fingerprint Criminal Records Check and Mandated Reporter Training required upon offer of employment.
 
Full-Time/Part-Time Part-Time  
Work Hours 20-25 hours per week; days, evenings, and weekends required.  
Salary $17.00 per hour
