Major Gifts Officer

Under the direction of the Director of Development, the Major Gifts Officer will collaborate with the Resource Development team to ensure funding priorities are met and to implement fundraising programs needed to sustain robust gift support from the community.

The Major Gifts Officer, will play a central role in working with major gifts staff, campaign leadership and organization colleagues to build and complete a successful campaign by coordinating, facilitating, and shaping the implementation of the campaign strategy and annual giving plans. The Major Gifts Officer role is an integral position at Opportunity Village serving as a team member to both the Annual Campaign and Capital Campaign initiatives.

  1. In collaboration with the Major Gifts team, raise the funds to meet the fiscal budget and for capital campaign needs.
  2. Planning the solicitation of major donor prospects in their portfolio (individual, foundation and corporation) including appropriate solicitors, cultivation, request amounts, stewardship and research.
  3. Support the comprehensive fundraising campaigns to include; annual giving, major gifts, endowments, events, legacy giving and the capital campaign.
  4. Participate in meetings with the Gift team members, ensuring agenda is followed and goals are met.
  5. Develop and utilize major donor and prospect cultivation strategies.
  6. Use Donor Perfect software to track, solicit and report on all prospects.
  7. Work closely with the marketing team to support the creation and maintenance of communication platforms, presentations, committee and donor presentations, and reports.
  8. Responsible for personal portfolio management, with a focus on donor retention and engaging new donors
  9. Support coordination of the workflow among departmental functions to ensure efficient and timely implementation of fundraising and stewardship tasks to ensure optimal donor relationships.
  10. Plan and implement cultivation and stewardship strategies to motivate donors.
  11. Solicit contributions of $500-$2500 or more to also include Capital Campaign support.
  12. Support preparation of accurate, accessible and appealing quarterly reports and campaign progress reports for senior managers and board committees.
  13. Adhere to the budget in both fundraising goals as well as expenses to the organization.
  14. Participate in all aspects of the gift cycle:
    • Initiate contacts with potential leadership and major gift donors/prospects
    • Develop appropriate cultivation strategies for them, including working with volunteers
    • Move potential donors in an appropriate and timely fashion toward solicitation and closure
    • Make solicitations when appropriate
    • Maintain stewardship contacts with donors; adhere to the highest ethical standards; demonstrate empathetic disposition, and perseverance; reflect optimistic and positive attitude, and convey sensitivity to needs of the donors
  15. 65% of time management is expected to focus on interfacing with donors and meeting with prospects.
  16. Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Knowledgeable about the role of technology in donor communications and fundraising.
  • Successful experience in making cold calls as well as developing cultivation and solicitation strategies.


  • Required: Bachelor’s Degree in Fundraising, Nonprofit Administration, Business or related field or equivalent.
  • Required: Experience working with high-level decision makers, trustees, and other stakeholders.
  • Preferred: Demonstrated experience the phases of capital campaign fundraising: leadership, major, and community gift phases.
  • Preferred: Knowledge of local philanthropic community.
  • Preferred: Experience with Donor Perfect of other donor database software.
  • Preferred: Experience working with individuals with disabilities.
