WIC Educator (Women, Infant & Children) (Glenwood Springs) (Bilingual Skills Required)

The WIC Educator is a non-exempt position with a hiring range of $17.42 - $21.77 hourly.

General Purpose:

Deliver any part of a full range of WIC services to participants, including, but not limited to, determining and documenting eligibility, issuing food instruments (checks), maintaining participant and program records, interviewing, coaching/counseling, providing nutrition education with behavior change goals, and developing individual care plans based on a sound understanding of nutritional concepts.

Essential Functions:

  1. Complete training program within established guidelines.
  2. Perform emergency response roles, as requested.
  3. Perform other duties of a similar or related level as necessary or assigned.
  4. Determine participants' financial eligibility for the WIC program;
  5. Make and plot accurate anthropometric measurements. Measures hematocrit in blood and assesses adequacy;
  6. Analyze diet recalls for adequacy and assigns appropriate risk factors;
  7. Determine and tailor food packages for individual needs;
  8. Provide a full explanation of the program to participants to prevent misuse; explains nutrition risk factors; explains purpose of the WIC food package and the nutrients provided;
  9. Refer to other agencies or program RD according to WIC policy;
  10. Assist participants with individual nutrition education plans; sets appropriate behavior change goals; makes follows-up plan and documents progress toward goals; re-evaluates and establishes new goals as needed;
  11. Understand retailer requirements; documents requests and problems from both participants and retailers; refers problems to appropriate persons as needed.
  12. Drive vehicle to perform one or more essential functions.
  13. Perform other duties of a similar or related level as necessary or assigned.

Job Qualifications:

Knowledge of:

  1. Effective interviewing and counseling techniques.
  2. Grammar, spelling and punctuation.
  3. Keyboarding, data entry and word processing skills.
  4. Modern office processes and procedures.
  5. Relevant computer hardware and software applications.
  6. Basic math skills.
  7. Federal and state program guidelines.

Ability to:

  1. Speak, read and write the English and Spanish languages.
  2. Communicate effectively verbally and in writing in both English and Spanish; translate written and verbal English and Spanish.
  3. Read and record data and maintain records.
  4. Coordinate scheduling and complete paperwork within time limits.
  5. Carry out assigned projects to their completion and complete daily activities according to work schedule, with minimal supervision.
  6. Establish and maintain a working relationship with employees, other departments, supervisors, the public, vendors and the applicants.
  7. Understand and practice safety procedures and precautions.
  8. Maintain confidentiality.

Required Physical Activities:

While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is frequently required to reach, grasp, finger, stand and/or sit for long periods of time, walk, talk and hear; occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus.

In times of public health emergency, the employee will be required to report for specialized duties inside or outside Garfield County, once their critical personal and family emergency responsibilities have been met.

Work Environment:

The noise level in the office and clinic settings is moderately loud with frequent interruptions and multiple demands. The employee is occasionally exposed to pathogens via body fluids.

Required Travel:

The employee is occasionally required to travel between offices.

Computers and Office Equipment:

Computer and relevant software applications; calculator; telephone system; facsimile; shredder; copier.

Position Requirements

Minimum Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Associate or Bachelor degree in Education, Nutrition or Public Health preferred.

Minimum Experience: : 1 year providing WIC Education resources.
