191086 - Teen Library Assistant 

Location CLP - East Liberty  

Job Summary: Seeking a highly motivated and technology savvy individual to serve as a Teen Library Assistant for the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh-East Liberty. The Teen Library Assistant acts as a mentor and connects teens to resources and opportunities that reflect their interests, respond to their needs within diverse and changing communities, and empower them to be builders of their own future.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Working in conjunction with the Youth Services Librarian, Teen Library Assistant and Teen Labs Mentor to execute the vision of Teen Services through outreach, in-house programming, and engaging teens in volunteer opportunities;
  • Support location-based and system-wide partnerships and outreach efforts;
  • Develop rapport with teens and young adults and helping to fulfill their informational and recreational needs;
  • Create and conduct teen programming in consultation with other Youth Services staff and colleagues throughout the system, assisting in children’s programming as needed;
  • Participate in system-wide initiatives and programs, and perform committee work;
  • Provide reference and reader’s advisory assistance to all audiences;
  • Managing the teen space, including space upkeep and inventory, creating engaging displays;
  • Assist with day-to-day operations of the branch, including circulation, registration, and shelving;
  • Continuing to cultivate a timely and dynamic teen collection that is representative of the community’s needs in consultation with the Coordinator of Children’s Collections.
Position Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree;
  • Exceptional verbal and written skills;
  • Experience working with teens in urban and informal settings;
  • Ability to work as part of a team; manage assignments and responsibilities effectively in a busy urban environment;
  • Must be able to work flexible hours and shifts in accordance with the library hours of operation;
  • Knowledge of teen literature, emerging media, creative software, and library programming is preferred;
  • Experience creating curricula and programming for youth (12-22) is strongly desired;
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation;
  • PA Criminal Record Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance, FBI Fingerprint Criminal Records Check and Mandated Reporter Training required upon offer of employment.
Full-Time/Part-Time Part-Time  
Work Hours 25 hours per week; days, evenings and weekends required.  
Salary $17.00 per hour
