Description

Definition and Purpose

Under the direct supervision of the Executive Director, the Director – Recreational Sports is responsible for the management of the recreation activity based programs housed within ASI facilities: Recreation Center, Sports Complex, Doerr Family Field, and Poly Escapes.

Additionally, all ASI employees are responsible for upholding the core values of the organization including but not limited to exhibiting professional behavior, acting as a role model to others, displaying a positive and cooperative attitude, communicating effectively, developing expert knowledge in area of specialization, and working together as a team.

Educational and Qualifying Experience, Skills, Licenses, Credentials

Educational/License/Credential Requirements

Graduation from a four-year college or university.

Master’s degree in related field (4 years applicable experience may be substituted for educational requirement).

Current American Red Cross Certification in the following: Adult CPR, AED and First Aid.

Experience Requirements

Minimum eight (8) years of experience the demonstrates the ability to perform the necessary functions of the position.

Minimum five (5) years experience administering Recreational Sports programs and/or facilities preferably on a college or university campus.

Experience in budgeting and fiscal management.

Supervisory experience required.

Knowledge/Skill Requirements

Thorough knowledge of correct English grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

General knowledge of office methods, equipment, procedures, and practices.

Knowledge of Windows-based computer systems.

Ability to effectively communicate both orally and written; strong public speaking ability.

Ability to establish and maintain a cooperative working relationship with staff, students, faculty and others.

Demonstrated skills in group supervision/leadership.

Ability to gather and analyze complex data and situations in order to draw valid conclusions and make appropriate recommendations.

Excellent organizational skills and the ability to coordinate multiple projects and meet deadlines.

Working knowledge of safety standards and procedures.

Demonstrated ability to work well with others on diverse teams.

Working knowledge and understanding of financial record-keeping methods, procedures and practice.

Demonstrated ability to adapt to organizational, procedural, policy, and technological changes.

Ability to interpret, communicate and apply administrative regulations, codes, policies, procedures, and precedents.

Knowledge of public and business administration including organizational, fiscal, and personnel management.

Working knowledge of the practices, procedures, and activities of student personnel development and programming.

Ability to plan, organize and lead others to work collaboratively to meet project and organizational goals.

Strong knowledge of practices and standards set forth by the National Intramural Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA).

Supervisory Responsibilities

Directly supervise Assistant Director – Recreational Sports, Director – Fitness and Wellness, and the Administrative Assistant II – Recreational Sports.

Oversee supervision of all subordinate staff in Recreational Sports department.

Facilitate meetings, conduct performance evaluations, establish goals, and monitor day-to-day operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Organizational Responsibilities

Coordinate and implement organization-wide functions as assigned by the Executive Director as a member of the ASI Director team, meet regularly with other management personnel to establish and ensure effective on-going communication and coordination between departments.

Assist program managers and directors with all aspects of program and service delivery.

Personnel and Policy Administration

Direct the planning, assessment, and coordination of comprehensive Recreational Sports program and services.

Responsible for planning and development for the recruiting, selection, orientation, training and development of student and professional staff.

Direct the policy development for all areas of programming, administration and operations for campus recreational programs.

Lead the student manager development team in all programmatic aspects of student manager training and ongoing support.

Operations and Facility Management

In conjunction with the Director – Facilities Management, develop and implement policies, procedures and operational systems for safely and successfully operating the ASI managed Recreational Facilities.

In conjunction with the Director – Facilities Management, direct the planning, assessment, and coordination of the daily facility operations for the campus Recreation Center.

Ensure safe operating conditions while managing all campus recreation facilities including gymnasiums, pools, fields, and courts.

Develop and coordinate long range recreational program facility needs for the ASI and campus community.

Assist in coordinating the maintenance, repair, and renovations for recreational program related facilities and equipment.

Fiscal Management

Forecast, develop and monitor the annual Recreational Sports budget.

Create long-term financial plan with attention to revenue generating programs and services.

University Relations

Represent ASI to other campus entities including Facility Services, Facility Planning, Administration and Finance, Athletics, Housing, Kinesiology and Student Affairs in all Recreational Sports areas.

Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with on and off-campus entities as appropriate

Liability & Risk Management

Coordinate risk management policies and procedures for Recreational Sports programs and service entities in conjunction with the Associate Executive Director.

Identify and monitor appropriate practices and standards of operation for Recreational Sports programs and services.

Direct the planning and training of staff for emergency response to all programs conducted at all ASI managed recreational facilities throughout the campus.

Recreation Center Front Line Services

Oversee the supervision of planning, coordination, service delivery and assessment of the comprehensive front line services program and staff at the Recreation Center.

Recreation Center Student Staff Training and Development

Oversee the supervision and management of the student staff training, development and recognition programs at the Recreation Center.

Recreation Center Membership Services

Oversee the supervision and management of the membership services program including financial and marketing components.

Diversity and Inclusion

Develop, implement, and monitor programs that promote diversity and inclusion within the organization.

Develop training and initiatives to create and foster an open and inclusive environment.

Regularly communicate internal and external diversity and inclusion initiatives, events, and progress.

Identify, build, and sustain community partnerships to support corporate diversity and inclusion projects/plans/initiatives and business strategies.

Assessment & Planning

Assist the Associate Executive Director with the development of corporate wide strategic planning and assessment

Develop and execute assessment of programs and/or services for areas of responsibility including, but not limited to, setting and implementing goals, evaluating outcomes and ongoing enhancement.

Participate in the overall ASI assessment planning and goal setting.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

Represent ASI management on student leadership committees as appropriate.

Advise and assist the Board of Directors in the drafting of bills, resolutions, and policies related to ASI programs and services.

Attend and participate in meetings as necessary.

Ensure continuous professional development.

The person holding this position is considered a "mandated reporter" under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in ASI policy as a condition of their employment.

Other duties as assigned.
