About the Organization The internationally renowned Mark Morris Dance Group (MMDG) has received 'highest praise for their technical aplomb, their musicality, and their sheer human authenticity.' Founded in 1980, the Dance Group performs the repertory of choreographer Mark Morris, hailed as the 'the most successful and influential choreographer alive, and indisputably the most musical' (The New York Times), whose work is acclaimed for its ingenuity, musicality, wit, and humanity. Live music and community engagement are vital components of the Dance Group. It has toured with its own musicians, the MMDG Music Ensemble, since 1996, and regularly collaborates with orchestras and opera companies around the world. In addition to 17 full-time dancers, the organization currently employs 34 full-time staff and 75 part-time staff, teaching artists, and musicians.

In the heart of the Brooklyn Cultural District, the Mark Morris Dance Center, founded in 2001, is the hub of dance and music education in Brooklyn. The nine-studio building provides affordable classes in multiple genres for people of all ages, levels, with and without disabilities, accompanied by live music. The studios, a performance space, a Wellness Center, and ancillary spaces are all available to the community and to nonprofit organizations at subsidized rates. MMDG's Community Education Programs partner with public and private schools and community centers to provide customized classes. MMDG also offers customized dance workshops for persons with Parkinson's disease and their caregivers.

INTERNSHIPS WITH THE MARK MORRIS DANCE GROUP

The Mark Morris Dance Group seeks candidates for its Internship Program who are interested in gaining valuable experience in arts administration at a cultural nonprofit organization.

Application period: October 21 – November 17, 2019
Term: January 13 – May 29, 2020
Mandatory Orientation Date: Monday, January 13, 2020 from 1-3pm

INTERNSHIPS FOR THE SPRING TERM ARE AVAILABLE IN THESE AREAS OF CONCENTRATION:

  • Education (The School, Adult Program, Community Education)
  • Dance for PD®
  • Development (Fundraising)
  • Operations
  • Marketing

Interns are an important part of the MMDG community. MMDG makes a commitment to providing project-based, meaningful work with a focus on career development for all interns. Participants will experience a broad overview of the organization through involvement with various special projects and events. Interns receive direct supervision and participate in regular check-ins with their on-site supervisor. Many have gone on to become full-time employees at the Mark Morris Dance Group and enjoyed successful careers in the nonprofit performing arts sector.

  • Internships are hosted year-round for Fall, Winter/Spring, and Summer terms.
  • Applicants must be 18+ and authorized to work in the US.
  • MMDG’s internships require a commitment of 15-20 hours per week, but shorter or longer commitments will be approved on a case by case basis.
  • Internship opportunities for high school students are currently provided to our Arts Immersion Alumni and through our partnerships with Exploring the Arts, Exalt Youth, and Cristo Rey High School.

  • Stipends are available when programs/schools do not provide them. For qualifying internships, a weekly stipend of $75 is offered per 15-20 hour per week commitment.

Position Requirements

MMDG’s Operations Intern will assist the day-to-day operations of the Dance Center in support of the organization’s many programs. The internship will have a focus on space rentals, office management, and the Wellness Center. Project-based work will vary by term.

With a combination of administrative and hands-on responsibilities, MMDG’s Operations Intern will learn skills that can apply to a career in project management, arts administration, and programming.

Responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • Support Operations Coordinator with the weekly reconciliation of MMDG’s scheduling and registration software
  • Work with Director of Events and Venue Operations and Rental Programs Manager to develop Wellness Center handbook, outlining policies for practitioners, staff and dancers
  • Assist with the administration of the Subsidized Rehearsal Space Program, preparing reports and applications for grants and supporting the application and approval process
  • Participate in standing team meetings and manage action items for short-term projects
