Looking for a DYNAMIC Assistant Teacher to join our Child Development Center in Wilmington. (Monday - Friday 8:30 am - 5:30 pm). If you’re ready for a rewarding, challenging position with a sustainable organization, come join our team!

The Assistant Teacher is responsible for collaborating with the Lead Teacher to plan and implement evidence-based, developmentally appropriate, inclusive early care and education program for young children. Assistant Teacher must ensure the development and safety of children in accordance with federal and state legislation and policies.

  • Assists teacher in planning, preparing and implementing daily activities for indoor and outdoor learning environments that encourage each child’s growth in social, emotional, cognitive, language and physical development.
  • Given direction from lead teacher and specialized therapists, helps to successfully integrate specialized services into the curriculum.
  • Given direction from lead teacher and specialized therapists, supports the learning of children with special needs by embedding specialized instruction/ therapy, into the daily routine.
  • Provides personal care to children as needed, including toileting, feeding, hand washing and assisting children on and off the van.
  • Becomes familiar with the teacher’s written lesson plans, the daily schedule, methods for documentation, and all other daily duties of the teacher.
  • Assumes the teacher’s role in leading selected activities during designated parts of the class-day on a periodic basis for training purposes.
  • Assumes the teacher’s full role in the absence of the teacher and supervises the substitute who will act as the teacher assistant during that period.
  • Ensures the safety of children at all times and across all learning environments.
  • Contributes to the on-going assessment of child development through a variety of developmentally appropriate, culturally & linguistically responsive methods that are tied to daily activities. (Observation/ data collection/ work samples/ portfolios, etc.)
  • Maintains cooperative relationships and clear, positive communication with staff, children, families, support professionals, volunteers, and caregivers.
  • Works with other staff members to form a positive, supportive team atmosphere.
  • Participates in regular staff, parent and educational support meetings as requested.
  • Ensures confidentiality of privileged information.
  • Completes documentation as required by CDSA, LEA, ESUCP, administrators of public/ private grants and regulatory agencies.
  • Participates in professional development and in-service training as required by ESUCP and local/ state / federal regulatory and licensure agencies.
  • Participates in the maintenance of indoor and outdoor learning environments including equipment/ toys/ learning materials.
  • Follows all Easter Seals policies and procedures as appropriate to the position.
  • Complies with current Division of Child Development and Early Education, Developmental Day, Health & Sanitation, and rated license regulations.
  • Must demonstrate Easter Seals valued behaviors of Accountability, Commitment and Caring as appropriate to the position.
  • Completes required training within prescribed timeframes.
  • Performs related duties as requested by the teacher, director or other support staff.

Position Requirements


  • High School Diploma or GED required from a USDOE or CHEA accredited institution
  • NC Early Childhood Credential (NCECC) or equivalent
  • 6 semester hours in Early Childhood Education/ Child Development
  • 2 years verifiable early childhood work experience
  • Experience providing services to children with disabilities preferred.
  • Current, unrestricted, state-appropriate driver’s license and personal vehicle insurance

  • Ability to supervise and interact effectively with many young children at one time.
  • Establish and maintain effective collaborative relationships with parents & staff.
  • Demonstrate professional conduct and attitude while working with parents, staff, and community.
  • Ability to take direction and follow through effectively.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of child development and recommended practices in service provision for children who are typically developing and those with or at risk for developmental or behavioral/emotional disabilities.
