Our EMPOWER After School program in New Bern is seeking energetic applicants who are passionate about working 1:1 with children. We currently have several opportunities for Recreational Paraprofessionals to work one-on-one (1: 1) supporting children with disabilities and/or behavioral issues. Must be able to commit to an on-going Part-Time schedule (Mon-Fri 1:30 pm - 6:00 pm & every 3rd Saturday of the month). WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:

  • Responsible for working 1:1 with a child having special needs and aggressive behaviors (i.e. biting, kicking, hitting, emotional outburst, etc.)
  • Willingness to learn how to appropriately care for and support a child 1:1 with sensitive medical needs. Extensive on-site training provided by ESUCP.
  • Appropriately manage student behavior and guide student toward more acceptable social interactions.
  • Implement positive behavior support plans.
  • Model appropriate behavioral interventions
  • Communicate effectively in oral and written form, especially with parents.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with children and adults.
  • Work with staff in developing data collection systems, and monitor data collection to ensure the success of the child’s Individual Service Plan.
  • Assists with identifying individual goals.
  • Assists in developing and monitoring outcomes and adjusts as needed.
  • Assists individuals we support with inclusion.
  • Respects the dignity and individuality of each individual and his/her right to confidentiality.
  • Assists individuals we support with daily needs.
  • Ensures that the safety, health, hygiene and nutritional needs of the individuals we support are met.
  • Lifts and transfers individuals we support as needed.
  • Assists individuals at learning and increasing skills in all areas of independence, this includes, but is not limited to: Self-help skills, independent living skills, accessing community resources and pursuit of leisure activities, if an individualized plan exists, this document serves as a guide for these supports.
  • Participates in all program activities with participants.
  • Completes required paperwork (may vary by location) accurately and as required by the program.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Maintains a positive and enthusiastic attitude.
  • Assists in daily and weekly clean-ups of facilities and activities areas.
  • Shows and encourages respect for personal property, program equipment, and facilities.
  • Sets an example for others through cleanliness, punctuality, sharing, sportsmanship, and other appropriate behaviors.
  • Fulfills assigned roles in enforcing safety regulations and emergency procedures.
  • Prepares for and actively participates in program orientation.
  • Attends all staff and program meetings.
  • Follows all program rules and regulations.

Position Requirements

YOU’RE A GREAT MATCH FOR OUR TEAM IF YOU HAVE:

• Minimum of 18 years of age, high school diploma or GED required from a USDOE or CHEA accredited institution.
• One year of college or equivalent preferred.
• Must have 2 years of hands-on experience working one-on-one (1:1) supporting children with special needs and aggressive behaviors.
• Ability to communicate effectively and positively with staff members and participants to provide a safe and healthy environment.
• Demonstrate an understanding, patient, and receptive attitude toward students of varied age groups, and varied disabilities
• Ability to appropriately enforce safety regulations and emergency procedures.
• Physical ability to transfer participants in and out of wheelchairs, push people in wheelchairs, and assist participants with activities of daily living.
• Ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to daily program activities.
• Has an appreciation and respect for the outdoors.
• Exhibits enthusiasm, creativity, and a sense of humor.
• Ability to work independently, handle multiple responsibilities and assigning priority to activities.
• Ability to manage the goals of multiple individuals and families on a timely basis.
• Must complete and maintain current Easterseals UCP training curriculum, which includes, but not limited to the following: CPR/First Aid, NCI (as appropriate), Medication Administration (as appropriate), OSHA/BBP training, core competencies and other training relevant to the position as defined by local program guidelines.
• Must possess a valid, unrestricted, state-appropriate driver’s license and maintain current vehicle insurance.
• Must be able to provide own reliable transportation for use in the program, and/or be willing to transport program participants in agency vehicles- e.g. van or mini-bus.
