Description

The Associate Program Officer provides high-level support to the Program Officers and Program Director and has responsibility for select grants. This position is designed as a path toward a career in public policy or philanthropy and is for an initial term to last through August 31, 2020.

 

GENERAL POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Position Specific Responsibilities

  • Supports program officers in grants-related activities as assigned, which may include drafting requests for proposals, grant monitoring and evaluation, conducting research, preparing reports and presentations, assisting with surveys, and other projects.
  • Serves as the program officer on select grant-funded work and grant-equivalent contracts, including developing deliverable schedules, meeting with the grantees in an advisory role, and evaluating the performance of the grant-funded projects.
  • Reviews project deliverables, revises as necessary, and participates in communication planning around project findings and recommendations.
  • Remains up-to-date and knowledgeable about the scientific literature and health policy environment, including California and federal legislation, regulations and guidance related to children with special health care needs.
  • Assists in conducting research and obtaining background information to guide grantmaking, goal setting and strategies.
  • Plans and organizes grantee convenings.
  • Participates in developing and implementing a grants-related social media strategy, including conducting research about current events regarding the program areas of interest; drafting and editing content to be posted; and engaging with the Foundation’s grantee and stakeholder audiences.
  • Participates in communications and external relations activities related to promotion of grant products.
  • Contributes to department-wide planning and activities.
  • Completes related duties as assigned.

  • Shows initiative to take on additional tasks, duties and assignments to ensure the department fulfills its responsibilities.
  • Recommends new approaches, procedures and processes to effect continual improvements in efficiency of department and services performed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Regular and predictable attendance is required.

EDUCATION

 

Required: A Bachelor’s Degree

 

Preferred: A master’s degree in Public Health, Health Policy, Public Administration or a closely related field

Required:

  • Three years related professional work experience.
  • Familiarity with health policy and health care systems and a sincere interest in children’s health care services.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and work well under occasional deadline pressure.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment with a high level of productivity and initiative
  • Ability to be resilient and adaptable in the face of changing priorities.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision along with a willingness to ask questions to clarify assignments and accept supervisor’s guidance.
  • Project development/management skills.
  • A positive, resourceful, solution-oriented attitude.
  • Highly organized with meticulous attention to detail and commitment to the quality, accuracy and presentation of work products.
  • Tactful, flexible and creative; able to interact well with diverse constituents and to represent the Foundation and the Department in a professional manner at external events.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Mature judgment and the ability to handle confidential information appropriately.
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Preferred:

  • Familiarity with grantmaking.
  • Master’s degree in public health or health policy.
  • Previous experience doing related work in a non-profit work environment.
  • Additional language proficiency.
