Tax staff or entry level accountants are supervised by senior accountants, managers and partners. Initially, they are given less complex tax assignments. As they gain experience, they are given more difficult assignments and greater responsibilities.

Tax Staff Responsibilities & Objectives:

  • Become familiar with the firm's policies and procedures
  • Become familiar with the firm technology, tax software and time and billing software.
  • Become familiar with the firm standards for paperwork preparation
  • Understand the rules, regulations, and code of professional conduct of the AICPA
  • Obtain exposure to the different types of tax engagements offered by the firm
  • Obtain a working knowledge of tax research techniques and the various research sources in the firm library
  • Assist in preparing individual tax returns under the supervision of more experienced staff
  • Perform other duties as assigned from time to time by the senior accountants, managers or partners
  • Obtain a general knowledge of the practice of public accounting and providing client services
  • Become proficient in research of moderately complex tax issues
  • Become familiar with the pertinent IRS regulations and rules

Position Requirements

Tax Staff Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor or Master’s accounting degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA and sufficient hours to sit for the CPA exam
  • Organized, energetic and self-directed with a professional appearance
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel
  • Familiar with the principals of financial statements, debits and credits and cash versus accrual accounting
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Desire to grow with in a public accounting firm
  • CPA eligible or actively pursuing CPA certification
